Mentor - your guide in a foreign land

Over 700 newcomers have found jobs in their professional field through the Mentoring Partnership in Peel Region.

"My mentor, Michael really motivated me to continue working towards my career goals. He coached me on what to say and how to best approach the right persons within organizations...it felt like I had someone in my corner!" says Claudia, a newcomer.

That is exactly what a mentor can do for you.  Mentors are individuals who are established in their profession and are knowledgeable about their sector.  They are willing to share their valuable experience and are sensitive to issues faced by newcomers in finding employment.

What is Mentorship
It is a relationship between an established professional in Canada (mentor) and a newcomer who is ready to learn and work towards finding a job.  The Mentoring Partnership formally brings together skilled newcomers (mentees) and established professionals (mentors) in occupation-specific mentoring relationships.

Depending on the mentoring relationship, a mentor and a mentee may work on establishing professional networks, selecting skills upgrading programs and information on potential employers.

"So far 1025 newcomers are matched with 1025 mentors in Peel Region and as a result, more than 70% of the newcomer mentees found jobs in their own profession." excitedly says Nitin Dora of Dixie Bloor Neighbourhood Centre.  Those who found jobs were actively job searching under the guidance of a mentor,  the Mentor did not hire them, adds Nitin.

How are newcomers matched
Newcomers are matched with mentors based on common educational background, work experience and career goals.  Matched mentors and mentees attend 90-minutes orientation sessions to prepare them for their respective roles.  Mentors and mentees then negotiate the objectives of the mentoring relationship and spend 24 hours over a period of four months.

Program coach supports the relationship and follows-up once a month. At the end of the four month relationship, program coach will bring the closure and obtain feedback.

Who is a Mentee
Mentees are individuals who have the education, professional training and three years' work experience gained outside Canada.   They are fluent in English with CLB level 8, unemployed or underemployed and have completed a job search workshop.

Existing 52 corporate partners include Air Canada Jazz, Baxter Corporation, City of Brampton, City of Mississauga, Microsoft Canada, Mississauga Board of Trade, Pepsi-QTG Canada, Pitney Bowes Canada, the Region of Peel and the United Way of Peel Region.  New efforts are being made to find mentors in Healthcare at Credit Valley Hospital, Mount Sinai and St Michael's.  Once these partners join, newcomers who are internationally trained Nurses, Pharmacists, Lab Technicians, Bio Medical Engineers might be accepted as mentees.

NEW SERVICE
Volunteer and Gain 'Canadian' Experience

Volunteering can be fun and satisfying. For newcomers it brings an opportunity to gain "Canadian Experience".  It is not unpaid work, it is free training!  A centre especially for Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon residents is launched to match individuals with volunteer opportunities.  Each individual completes a Volunteer Registration form which will help search an opportunity that is of specific interest to the individual.  For more information, contact nic@tcet.com

Quote of the Month
All life's problems and barriers  have solutions, that is why they are called  "problems", the only problem that we cannot solve is not a problem. So don't hesitate to keep knocking on all doors, one might be waiting to be opened by you.
