"It is very rewarding for me as a counsellor when clients remember me."
Jagjit Arneja got a job within one week of referring to a company and when he came to say "thanks", I felt empowered because that day was six months after he got the job!!
He remembered.

new for long!
Newsleter from Newcomer Information Centre |
Watch out, you might find a job hiding!
Wouldn't you be impressed if you are chosen for your special talent, not just because the employer needs someone to get that job done?
It is the same rule if applied to the employers. An employer is more likely to be impressed if you knew why you are applying to that company or business, provided you have the necessary skills. Think of applying to a college program. Your chances of admission are higher if you knew why you want to study a particular program at a particular college.
Your favourite employer could be a company or a sector. It could be a small size company or a Fortune 500 company or a Government agency. It could be related or not related to your experience.
Let's say you have experience from your country selling cosmetics. The skills you must have developed are better transferable to a company dealing with cosmetics in Canada than any other company. So instead of applying to all kinds of companies, why not target your job search to cosmetics companies or businesses looking for your special experience. Your chances to hear back from such an employer is higher versus any other.
"I am a chemist. After I got laid off I sent my resume to 46 pharmaceutical companies using Scott's Directory and got offers from two companies!" said Ghulam, a client at the Centre.
Once you have figured your favourites, you need to find the contact details of these employers. For example, you may want to contact all the employers in Mississauga dealing with cosmetics.
One of the professional tools you have available is Scott's directories. The directories are updated annually and provide you with: 1. Names of the company and its executives, its products and services 2. Number of employees, year the business was established, its parent company 3. Address, website, phone numbers and fax number |
|
"The directories are useful to access the hidden job market plus clients have access to many paid websites that they don't have at home when they come to the centre," says Serene Rifai, Employment Counsellor at the Malton Employment Resource Centre.
You can search for businesses by company name, city and type of business for following markets: · Manufacturers, wholesalers, Distributors · Transportation & Warehousing · Real Estate & Property Management · Financial Institutions and Law firms · Retail offices · Construction, Engineering, architectural, B2B · Government offices · Health care practitioners
Scott's directories are available in print and online at all Newcomer Information Centres and Employment Resource Centres. For more information, please email nic@tcet.com |
