The ghost of loneliness is gone!
I came to Canada with my husband on a visitor visa. The first two months passed by very quickly, but in August I started wondering what I will do for the next three-four months. After seeing a program on TV, I decided to visit the Newcomer Information Centre.
When I came to the centre, I was delighted with the warm welcome and found that the counsellors quickly understood my need. I felt as if I am not in a new place. I found many useful ways to spend my time and the ghost of loneliness went away! I am going to share all my good experiences when I go back to India and tell them that Canada is such a nice place. Although I am enthusiastic and very happy that at least I gave my best efforts in the interview, I can not thank you enough for the opportunity that you have given me.
I will make sure that any newcomer to this country goes and sees you for assitance.
I know your time is very important and your help has really meant alot to me. I am indebted forever...

HOMESCHOOL
Homeschooling - an option to teach children at home
Homeschooling is an interesting option in Ontario to teach children at home instead of sending them to a school.
You must be wondering if it is legal to do that. It is legal to educate your children at home, if you prefer to do that. You need to notify the School Board of your intent to do so
providing information such as names, ages and gender of your children.
Now you must be wondering which curriculum should you follow. You may use a more structured curriculum or follow a child-centered approach allowing the child to follow his/her natural interest. On the other hand, you may wish to follow the same grade sequence as the public schools. If yes, please see the general guidelines about Ministry of Education's curriculum policy. You also have the option to buy grade-appropriate curriculum from the Independent Learning Centre or from other sources.
It is a good idea to keep records of how you are teaching and what assignments the children are being made to do. At a later date, when you decide to send your children to the school, it is easier, if you kept records, to show the Principal that you provided satisfactory instruction to your children.
If you would like your children to participate in assessments for students in Grades 3, 6, 9 and Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, please contact your school board. The assessments are administered by the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO).
In Peel, you also have the option to send your children to school for half a day and homeschool for the other half of the day. Call Peel District School Board at 905-890-1099 ext. 3729 and talk to the homeschooling liaison.
