Are You Professionally Connected?

networkingIt is important for you to be professionally connected even if you are new to the country.  Don't wait till you get frustrated.  What happens is that most newcomers start looking for jobs the usual way - sending resumes to job postings be it online or through paper - till they realize they are not able to get any response.  It takes them a while before they learn that it is 'not' the best way to find a job.

After some time, what they start doing is to self-blame...why did I come to Canada...I don't have Canadian experience...I don't know anybody...my English is not good...I don't have a Masters degree...I am brown, black or European ...or some other inadequacy.

Remember there is nothing wrong with you.  You just need to be where the employers are looking and if 85% of jobs are found through networking, wouldn't it make more sense to spend majority of your job-search time on building and developing contacts?

If you don't want to go out in this weather, try networking through your computer!  LinkedIn is one such site where you can connect with other professionals looking to connect - a professional networking site.  They say it is almost unprofessional not to be on LinkedIn these days!
