| MEMBERSHIP MATTERS | Do you know the saying, 'You don't know what you don't know'? It came to mind recently in a discussion about the Allied Dental Team Membership offered by the New Hampshire Dental Society. The letter asking the hygienist to consider membership states that "you will enjoy reduced fees for NHDS-sponsored continuing education programs, receive informational mailings, and have the opportunity to enjoy the many endorsed products and services offered to our members, and are affiliated with the leading professional voice for oral health issues in New Hampshire." Sounds good, a $25 membership for all that......and to boot, your dentist/employer will probably pay that fee as an employee benefit. Aahhhh, but what you may not know is that as an allied team member, you do not have a vote or a voice. ADHA/New Hampshire serves as your voice in issues that impact your profession-the dental hygiene scope of practice, settings you work in, requirements for licensure. ADHA/New Hampshire works to secure a future for dental hygiene by protecting the value of our educational credentials and preserving the integrity of our licenses. No other organization is solely committed to representing the dental hygiene profession. Who knows a dental hygienist better than a dental hygienist? Any questions on membership to YOUR professional organization, ADHA/New Hampshire, contact Molly Patterson, RDH, membership chair, molly@theflossboss.net

| The Economy and Women | | |
Women Play Growing Role in Economy By Jim Giguere on Friday, December 4, 2009. If your family's budget has become more reliant on the female members of the household, you are not alone. A recent University of New Hampshire study shows that the percentage of wives' contribution to family earnings rose to 45% in 2008, representing the largest single-year increase in a decade. Poverty-stricken families are even more reliant on wives and mothers--they supply a full 59% percent of earnings.

| Health Care Reform | Exciting times for dental hygiene!
The new heath care reform bill contains a number of oral health provisions including a mandatory oral health benefit for children (up to age 21) as part of any essential benefits package offered through health insurance exchanges called for in the bill. The legislation also recognizes dental hygienists as primary oral health providers through the inclusion of dental hygiene providers, students, and education programs as eligible entities for workforce development funds. Additionally, the legislation provides for 15 demonstration grants to train or employ alternative dental health care providers to evaluate emerging workforce models that improve access to oral health care. Public health dental hygienists, independent dental hygienists, advanced practice dental hygienists, and dental therapist models are listed models eligible for the grants.
Health Insurance Reform and New Hampshire Had we done nothing, by 2019 the number of uninsured people would have grown by more than 30 percent in 29 states and by at least 10 percent in every state. The amount of uncompensated care provided would more than double in 45 states. Businesses in 27 states will see their premiums more than double. And fewer people would have coverage through an employer. In addition to families and businesses struggling with high health care costs, state governments have really felt the burden.

NH Health Care Celebration
On March 21, affirmative votes cast by 219 congressmen and women forever altered the landscape of the United States health care system as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was approved. Two days later it would be signed into law by President Obama.
On Saturday afternoon, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, D-N.H., and Rep. Paul Hodes, D-N.H., were honored for their support of national health reform at a community celebration at South Church on State Street in Portsmouth. The event was hosted by the member organizations of N.H. Health Care for America Now and N.H. Voices for Health.
"I am thrilled to be here today to share this experience with the many forces that made health care reform a reality," said Sarah Chaisson Warner, chairwoman of N.H. Health Care for America Now, "including our congressional leaders, grassroots activists, organizational partners and state and community leaders."
Chaisson read off the list of more than 40 partner organizations (including NHDHA!) throughout New England that aided in the effort to make reform possible. "Each and every one of you were one of countless people on the ground who just refused to accept the status quo and fought for health care rights," she said.
"Like many of the most successful comprehensive reforms in our country," said Lisa Kaplan Howe of N.H. Voices for Health, "the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has created a new and much improved framework for a health care system that was in desperate need of repair. No longer is access to health care and health coverage a privilege to the lucky. For the first time, our country has affirmed what we have all known for years that health care is a fundamental right."

And More Good News on Oral Health: NH Legislature Approves Sealants Rule Susanne Kuehl, President, New Hampshire Dental Hygienists' Association (NHDHA), reports that the Joint Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (JLCA) has approved a rule that will allow dental hygienists under public health supervision to apply sealants without a prior examination by a dentist. The Board of Dental Examiners approved the rule in September; the last step before the sealants rule takes effect is for the Board to file the final rule with the Office of Legislative Services and this action is expected soon. Kuehl says the sealants rule is a huge step forward for preventive dental healthcare. NH hygienists will soon be able to provide services to more children who now needlessly suffer from tooth decay, she says. According to the Centers for Disease Control, "...only about one-third of children aged 6-19 years have sealants. And, although children from lower income families are almost twice as likely to have decay as those from higher income families, they are only half as likely to have sealants."
NH Survey of Third-Graders Shows Improvement in Oral Health Here is good news from Nancy Martin (RDH), Oral Health Program Manager, NH Department of Health and Human Services: New Hampshire has just released the results of its 2009 Third-Grade Healthy Smiles-Healthy Growth Oral Health-BMI (Body Mass Index) survey. More than 3,000 students were reached state-wide, in 81 schools. The survey data represent the first state and regional obesity data and the first oral health data. When compared to 2001statewide data from the first oral health survey, the 2009 results indicate that the oral health of NH's children has improved. |

NHDHA held its' first CE Event of 2010 on March 20 at SNHU. The presenter was Richard Nagelberg, DDS and the course was titled, "Periodontal Medicine, Medical Manifestations of Periodontal Disease." I am proud to say this event was an overwhelming success.
Based on the course evalutations, the speaker, the topic, and the venue were all well received. Our presenter, Dr. Nagelberg commented on the attentiveness of the audience and how thorough and well thought out participant questions were.
I would like to personally thank the hygienists that helped with the registration table, the CE Committee, Staff at SNHU, NHDHA Executive Board, and Lexian Management for making this day run seamlessly.
