Memebership Matters

ADHA New Hampshire
I recently was part of a dental hygiene study club in the Nashua area. Since this was the first meeting, it was an organizational and get-to-know one another meeting.  As I was listening to the other hygienists introduce themselves and their backgrounds, I was struck by the diversity of the group.  At the table we had new and seasoned hygienists, full time and very part-time hygienists, different practice settings and different interests, but all of us were there because of our desire to connect with other hygienists and to keep current with the ever-changing world of dental hygiene.

This small group from Nashua mirrors the diversity  of hygienists state-wide  in New Hampshire.   We are all different ages and in different stages of our lives. Some of us our burnt out, some are bringing great enthusiasm to the profession, and many are  scaling and polishing  day by day.  NHDHA offers something for everyone, at any stage of their professional life.   After learning that I am membership chair,  the phrase I hear most often from a hygienist is," Oh, I'd like to be involved, but I just don't have time."  My answer to that is, "That's OK, by simply being a member, you are  advocating for your profession and supporting NHDHA. At some point when life isn't so busy, you can become more involved."

Did you know that ADHA now offers a quarterly payment option for dues?  Simply go to ADHA.org to join.   Would you like to become involved with your state organization, NHDHA? Interested in a study club in your area?  Contact me, molly@theflossboss.net.

CRVNA dental Clinic at NHTI

Five Volunteer Hygienists are needed.  This clinic will service children through the age of 12.  The clinic runs from 8 -1pm and usually services approximately 50 children.  The care that will be given includes cleanings, exams, flouride and sealants.  Breakfast munchies and coffee will be provided.  It is important to note that in the past this clinic has provided a small stipend to hygienists that have participated.  Due to budgetary constraints and the recession, we are asking for volunteers.  If interested please contact  Sue Higgins at Hough1@metrocast.net

Dear Dental Hygienists of NH,

As I write this newsletter there are 1571 dental hgyienists in NH plus over 35 students getting ready to take their boards and join our ranks. Wow! Can you imagine the possiblities if we unleashed all of our potential as preventive specialists for health care? I can!

NHDHA invites you to stay informed about how YOUR association is working to advance our profession and mission. Sealants, Direct Access and Self Regulation have been at the front of our agenda. We know that jobs are scarce yet hygienists are needed in so many settings. Why do people rob banks? Because that's where the money is...so hygienists must go where the patients are: Ob-gyn offices, pediatric offices, public health and nursing homes.

Fact: Employment of dental hygienists is expected to grow 30 percent through 2016. This growth ranks dental hygienists among the 30-fastest growing occupations, in response to increasing demand for dental care. The demand for dental services will grow because of population growth, age of the population, and more focus on preventive dental care.

Fact: Opportunities for dental hygienists are expected to grow through 2012 with increased emphasis on disease prevention. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections expect dental hygiene to be one of the top five health professions from 2002 through 2012, and anticipate a 43 percent increase.

As a professional you MUST stay updated on issues to better serve your patients. It's up to you to develop YOUR career and NHDHA can help. Come to one of our CE courses, join our online FREE newsletter, help out on a committe, and you'll find your inner leader. As Margaret Thatcher said " disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and importance, although difficult, is the high road to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction."

Come join us and redisocver your professional pride.

Legislative Update HB 1593
NH state house HB 1593 has been moved forward 16-1 for  "interim study" after a 11-6 in favor vote for our amendment for a dental hygiene committee under the BODE. (voting in the negative was Pilotte, Day, Gould, Hawkins, Scammon and Reagan). The ED & A committee found the bill language "too inflammatory" for rule making authority even though it mirrored the Allied Health model that we originally submitted. While they support our autonomy in theory, they felt the amendment language needed work and time simply ran out for this work session. It was clear that an "advisory board" presented by Stacey Plourde for the BODE would have been nothing more than window dressing and it did not even get a second during the sub committee hearing. The ED & A stated they did not want to see our bill ITL (inexpedient to legislate) and so moved it to interim study which keeps the bill alive but not on the fast track.

We will regroup with our sponsors on tightening up our bill language and will attempt to work with both the NHDS and BODE but they are firmly against our professional autonomy.

It is an election year this fall and we may have lots of new faces in the legislature to get to know better. This means that we will need to start from square one as we educate them about our desire for autonomy and what RDH stands for. Start early and tell every patient you see what being a dental hygienist means to YOU.

Self Regulation for Dental Hygienists in NH

Come to the Mega Issues business meeting on March 20th at the next NHDHA continuing education course for more dialogue on the subject of True Professional Status. All are welcome!

Q: What's a Mega Issue?
A: It's a big dialogue session on a specific topic.

Topic of the month: What is self-regulation?

Professional regulation is oversight of licensure and practice of professions by state government to ensure the health and safety of the public.  The practice of each licensed profession is governed by a statuary practice act.  The practice creates a regulatory agency or board to implement the act.  Self-regulation means that members of the regulated profession are delegated the responsibility for operating that agency.

How would self-regulation benefit the public?
States allow professionals to participate in their own regulation so the state can benefit from the expertise of the profession. Dental hygienists are the experts on dental hygiene education and practice. They are in the best position to understand and make judgments on dental hygiene practice and education issues.
  • What would happen with this mega issue if nothing changes?
  • Are there significant critical uncertainties that we need to evaluate?
  • What are all the possible choices for responding to these issues?
  • Advantages and disadvantages of each
  • What could we do?
  • What is possible and who cares?
  • What should we keep or drop for consideration?
  • Do solutions align with our mission and goals?
