NHDHA has submitted legislation for self-regulation for dental hygienists in 2010, a policy change that is long overdue with HB 1593, establishing a board of dental hygienists. It is sponsored by Reps. Charlotte Houde-Quimby, Barbara French, Carla Skinder, Catriona Beck, and Rich DiPentima, and Sens. Kathleen Sgambati, Jacalyn Cilley and Matthew Houde and has been referred to the House Executive Departments and Administration Committee (ED&A). We hope you will show your support for YOUR profession by registering your support of HB 1593 on January 28th at 11:00 in Room 306, Legislative Office Building, Concord NH 03301; or by contacting your local legislator.
The heavy lifting is behind us and now we need YOUR energy to carry us to the finish line on our way to True Professional Status under One Mission with One Voice. Together....the possibilities are endless....and the future looks very bright. Get out of your comfort zone, out of the operatory and stretch your career goals by helping me, Joan F., Sue, Anne, Molly, Kristine, Jan, Joan T., Karen...real people with lives outside of dental hygiene who give so much of themselves and give back to our profession. It has been an honor working side by side with these dynamic, bright and highly professional colleagues who are truly making a difference for the patients we serve.
Come join us and see what all the excitement is about! Sincerely, NHDHA President Susanne Kuehl RDH, BS

NHTI SADHA Officers and Advisors Class 2010 The students and SADHA advisors gave me a warm welcome at my recent visit to their SADHA meeting. The meeting took place at NHTI on Oct. 27, and included all 39 of the senior Dental Hygiene Students and about 12 Freshman students with dessert provided by NHDHA. I shared my experience of how being an active member with my professional organization for over the last 20 years has helped me in my journey as a Dental Hygienist and offered many opportunities in leadership. I also provided an NHDHA legislative update as well as the ADHA brochure designed for students entitled "Opening the Door for You" and covered NHDHA's mission statement and current objectives. We also talked about what self regulation means to the practice of Dental Hygiene here in NH and why NHDHA is in support of the current legislation. I stressed the importance of converting their SADHA membership to an ADHA membership following graduation, and how NHDHA needs their continued support to help us better serve the public and advance our profession in the form of legislation. This is a very active SADHA group. They have already raised $2000.00 selling Yankee Candles and have tote bags, t-shirts, and beaded cancer bracelets available for sale as part of their continued efforts with fundraising. To date, they have visited Head Start programs, presented at a health fair, and are looking toward Operation Santa, where they will help a family in need. The current SADHA advisors are Katrina Magee and Jean Magee. Shelley DuPont,RDH Membership Committee |

Just One Being a member of ADHA has its tangible and intangible benefits. The ADHA website, adha.org, lists these tangible member benefits: discounts on car insurance, liability insurance, car rentals, hotels, uniforms, and loupes to name a few. Not to mention your member discounted rate at all ADHA /NHDHA sponsored continuing education courses. However, it is the intangible benefits that members say are the invaluable perks of their ADHA membership. It is the networking opportunities with peers that enable a hygienist to maintain long lasting professional relationships. It is the ability to reach out to hygienists throughout the state to be a resource for jobs, answer questions about aspects of clinical practice, and being part of rewarding volunteer opportunities. ADHA and NHDHA advocates as a voice of the profession in policy and professional issues that impact the hygienist and how we practice dental hygiene. These are the benefits of membership that are not listed on a website, but are priceless. ADHA now offers quarterly payments of dues. Check it out at adha.org. One pair of loupes: $ 1,300. Monthly massage to work out those shoulder knots: $75. Weekly yoga class to keep limber: $15. Value of membership: priceless! Oh, and the ' JUST ONE' title of this article? For the New Hampshire hygienist, it takes just one day's salary to pay for a yearlong membership to ADHA. Just one. Molly Patterson, RDH Membership Chair, Trustee, NHDHA
