Greetings!
|
The United Way of
Mifflin-Juniata's Annual Campaign Celebration was held on March 25, 2010. Throughout the evening, hundreds of
volunteers were recognized that support United Way
with both cash and time. The climax of
the evening was announcing that $530,885 had been raised. These funds will be
allocated to community agencies for use from July 2010 through June 2011.
Review of the annual report (available at www.mjunitedway.org) included Success By
6 securing a $100,000 grant from the Department of Public Welfare & Office
of Child Development and Early Learning, Day of Caring saving non-profits
$42,839 in just the manpower alone, Summer Food Program done in partnership
with the Department of Education resulting in $27,000 in 2009 and the Volunteer
Income Tax Assistance Program which brought over $106,500 back into the
community with just 2 borrowed laptops and 4 volunteers. "This is not a football game - it's not all or
nothing. It IS about the changes we can
make in people's lives and in our communities. Thank you for creating opportunities and hope for a better tomorrow." Marie
Mulvihill, Executive Director

Help Wanted - AmeriCorps VISTA
|
AmeriCorps can easily be thought of
as the domestic version of the Peace Corps. Since 1964, Volunteers In Service To
America (VISTAs) have worked to
create and promote programs that offer economic opportunities to strengthen
communities. AmeriCorps members are full-time volunteers, receiving a living
stipend through the Corporation for National and Community
Services. The United Way of
Mifflin-Juniata has participated in the AmeriCorps VISTA program for two
consecutive years. Because of the talents of our current VISTA member, we expanded the Summer Food Program, grew
the annual Day of Caring, and implemented Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)
sites for families making $49,000 or less. The United Way of
Mifflin-Juniata is currently looking to recruit someone interested in working
with us through the AmeriCorps VISTA program. Successful applicants must be at
least 18 years of age, but there is no upper age limit. VISTA members qualify with a college degree or a minimum
of three years of work experience. Many AmeriCorps VISTA members bring
significant work and life experiences to their assignment. Initiative,
flexibility and organizational skills are a must. This is a one year commitment with
an end-of-service education award of $4,725 or an end-of-service stipend of
$1,200. Interested persons should contact Holly for more detailed information:
