| Focus on Future Business Success Not Past Failure |
A CEO I know decided to hold a two-day session to improve project-management skills, and he kicked off the event by announcing that the executive group had a big problem with project failures.
One of the executives challenged that statement, saying the problem wasn't project management, it was too many priorities. The team was overwhelmed and unable to deliver.
In response to the executive's candour, the CEO lost it. He stood up from his chair, pounding his fist on the table and berated the team.
Leading should never be about humiliating. Instead, you should aim to lead by influence - motivating and inspiring people to deliver extraordinary results.
Fifty-five percent of communication is body language, 38 percent is the tone of your voice and 7 percent is the words you use. Therefore, it's critical to make sure you body language is positive. Instead of an emotional, aggressive approach, sit with an open stance (shoulders back, chin up high and arms open).
Also, don't obsess over past failures. It will only ensure more of the same in the future. Instead, realize that the past is for learning and then letting go. Focus on future success to motivate and inspire others, especially during tough economic times.
And finally, use motivating and inspiring questions like "What can I do to set you up for success?" and " I know you are up to raising the bar."
If you want the best out of your team, you are going to need to build trust, not destroy it.

Related book: The 80/20 Principle by Richard Koch. Whether you're investing in stocks, analyzing company sales, or looking at the performance of a Web site, you'll find that it's usually 20 percent that produces 80 percent of the total result. This means 80 percent of what you do may not count for much. Koch helps you to identify that 20 percent and shows you how you can get more out of your business, and life, for less. |
