 by: Austin Townsend I've been a huge control freak when it comes to planning my life. Like most people I always think I have a clear picture of what should happen next. What I'm going to do to further my education, what job I'm going to have, who my friends are, what my family will be doing, etc. In my mind I have things mapped out so perfectly, but there always seems to be a wrench thrown into all of my best plans. When I moved to Tallahassee in the Fall of 2006, I was certain that I was going to graduate from college in 3 years and move back to Jacksonville to be with my family. I also dropped out of Sorority Recruitment that Fall deciding that life wasn't for me. Well 6 years later, I can say I double majored and took 5 years at FSU, ended up a Sorority President, and I'm planning on staying in Tallahassee at least two more years to attend graduate school. I thought I had things figured out, but God messed up my plans. However He created a life for me that is better than I ever could have imagined. God has spent the last 6 years in Tallahassee reminding me that every single day I need to give up the plans I have for myself and let Him take full control. When things don't happen according to my plans I start to wonder why God is letting those things happen. But then I remember that I can't see the big picture. Romans 8:28 says "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those called according to his purpose." In times of trial, what an encouragement that is for us! I think that God continually puts us in situations where we feel uncomfortable or inadequate so that we become more dependent on Him. The fact that I'm not in control of my life is a difficult realization, but I am thankful that the One who created the universe has a perfect plan if I out my trust in Him.
(Austin Townsend graduated from FSU in 2011 and is a Sales Associate at Ann Taylor LOFT. This fall she will return to FSU to pursue a master's degree in Higher Education Administration.)
