By: Ochuko Jenije

What's up? My name is Ochuko Jenije. I was born and raised in Tallahassee, Florida.  I am 24 years old and currently work in Athletic Administration at Florida State University.  I played football at FSU from 2006-2010 while earning my bachelors and masters degree in Sport Management and Higher Education Administration.

Over the past year, the Lord has constantly reminded me that he is in control.  It is by his hands that I am guided.  As an athlete, I was conditioned to think that I have to do all the right things to get the results I want.  By God's grace, that is not the case.

The first sermon that I heard from Dean helped me decide that I needed to make a change in my thought process.  It was about contentment.  It was during his "The Grass is Always Greener" series.  He spoke about being content within the current situation that we were in. I was probably going through the roughest year of my life.  I tried to fix everything with my own power, which is miniscule compared to the Lord's.  I ended up digging much deeper holes for the Lord to pull me out of.  Through Dean's sermon series and a few lunch meetings with him, I began to see the light.

Through this whole process, I have fallen in love with Romans 12:12.  It says, "Rejoice in hope, be patient in affliction, and faithful in prayer."  In a way, I believe that contentment and Romans 12:12 can collaborate together.  To me, rejoicing in hope calls me to be very thankful for where I am in life and for what the Lord has done for me thus far in life.  I hear "patient in affliction" and think of going through difficult times but believing that God is preparing my heart for something amazing.  Not thinking that the "grass would be greener" elsewhere.  Finally, being "faithful in prayer" is to constantly seek, thank, and adore God.  I do not know how I could not be content with out Him.

I am thankful for the chance to share how the Lord is working with me and for a great church-family like City Church.  There is honestly none better!

Take care,

Ochuko Jenije
