[City Speak]

by: City Church Band Director - Todd Doss
"You work for a church?" I tend to get this question a lot. However, I don't get asked for the reasons you may think. More often than not, it's because of my failures people ask how I could be considered a "leader" at a church rather than my "stellar christian appeal." I do not live an unrepentant sinful life but it's surprising when I am honest with people about the sins of my past and current struggles that they are shocked to hear them. Yes, even for leaders temptation exists and we make huge mistakes. I am no less likely to be attacked than anyone who bears the name of Jesus Christ. Possibly I am more likely to be attacked, if the end goal of Satan is to destroy the church, why wouldn't he start at the top? With that in mind, pray for your leaders. Pray for Dean, pray for Matthew, pray for the pastors in this town who are literally on the front lines every day for the Gospel. It is our job as the church to support them, stand behind them, and love them. They are the ones who are the leaders in carrying out God's vision.
One of my friends who I have been sharing with at work is a self-proclaimed agnostic. We go to lunch often and we tend to get into conversations a lot about life and religion. One such conversation ended with him saying "Todd, you are just as bad as I am." I replied with "YES!!! YES, I am! And that is the beauty of God's saving grace is that no matter how bad I am, He still loves me, He still forgives me, He still has a place for me in heaven." Our last conversation went like this "Todd, why do you and your friends always push this Jesus crap on me?" and I simply stated "Dude, let's say for a moment what we believe is real, there is a Heaven and a Hell and you will go to one of them, then you understand why we wouldn't wish Hell on anyone." He paused...maybe you don't understand, this guy paused. The guy who has a rebuttal for everything, a smart remark to anything Jesus, an answer for all things Christianity and why he doesn't want it was speechless. His soul hasn't been won over yet but I know that conversation has reverberated with him for days now.
It's about honesty, it's about being real with the folks we have in our sphere of influence, it's not being ashamed to bring up the Gospel in conversation. No matter how scarred, battered, torn, stupid, tormented, depressing, (fill in the blank) your past may be, you are a life that was purchased at a price and you have a testimony to give. There is nothing shameful in the sins from which Christ has brought you out. You may be the very thing someone needs to hear to understand that there is no one too far from His reach for salvation. Your past is no longer your burden to bear. If you have been saved, you don't have the right to not share the Gospel.
This past Sunday, Pastor Dean made a promise that has never made it easier to share the Gospel. Just bring someone to Easter this year. That's it. Dean will present the Gospel. All pressure is off for you. Be the reason that someone you know has the opportunity to make the choice from eternal death, to eternal life. |
