[City Speak]

by: Chris Pope

Luke 10 has always been such a challenging passage of Scripture, and one that is often overlooked by many in the Church. Within our Christian communities, we rarely ask the question, "Disciple or Pharisee?". Too much introspection boarders on possible change of self (oh no!) and reckoning with answering we are the latter instead of the former.

At a conference I recently attended, Perry Noble, pastor of Newspring Church, argued that disciples that don't evangelize are Pharisees. I agree with his notion, and in Luke 10, Jesus sends out "70 others" in addition to his 12 disciples. From verses 2-12, Christ gives a multitude of instructions. Why is so much information necessary? Just like in real life, we need the most instruction when we are out of our comfort zone. Jesus sends people to (un)familiar places to do an uncomfortable work. We are called to be in relationship ("stay in the same house"), to proclaim truth ("the kingdom of God is near"), and to persevere through adversity ("we are wiping off as a witness against you even the dust of your town that clings to our feet").

In the season of Easter, and increasingly more in our lives, we need to coexist in both evangelism AND discipleship. The Pharisees loved the Word of God, as do many. But if we follow Christ, we are sent to places we do or don't know, build relationships, preach truth, and overcome. But the real kicker comes at the return of the 70. After their triumphs, Christ gives a stark reminder that we are to only "rejoice that (our) names are written in heaven." We respond to the cross of Christ appropriately by evangelism, not that evangelism gets us to heaven. Let Easter be a mark of being in our town, in relationship, and speaking the truth through adversity. Let Tallahassee see revival because of our submission as a church body to the call of God.
