[City Speak]

by: Kaylan Wells
If you don't know me, I have a 3 year old son and a 1 year old daughter...a very ACTIVE 3 year old son and 1 year old daughter. Do you know what I've learned since becoming the mother to these two children? That I will never feel completely well rested again...that I spend the majority of my days wiping noses and bottoms...yes, these are true things but for the sake of this article, I'll share one of the spiritual lessons I've learned since becoming a mother.
I am an ungrateful sinner who is desperately in need of the grace and mercy that God abundantly gives. If you've ever been around small children, you know they live in a very self-centered world. It's all about them and if something isn't all about them, they whine and complain to let you know. I spend much of my day correcting and guiding my children through these tantrums and to be honest, many days (ok, let's get real...every day) I find myself very frustrated.
"Why won't Jack be kind to Emma???!!!"
"Why is it so hard for Emma to share??!!!"
"Why do they have to complain about the smallest inconvenience??!!!"
And then the Holy Spirit reminds me that I do the same thing every single day. I try to justify it by reasoning that I'm complaining about something that is a legitimate "problem" or that I wasn't kind because I have good reason not to be. But, it's the same thing. I am failing to trust God to work out the situation I'm complaining about, or I'm allowing my flesh instead of the Holy Spirit to guide me in my responses to others. Whenever I do these things, the Holy Spirit reminds me that despite the fact that I am whiney and ungrateful, there is an incredible God who loves me anyway and sacrificed His own Son to pay my sin's debt. Last I checked, there's really not anyone in this world that I would put Jack on the chopping block for. And that's when I shut-up with the complaining and whining and am humbled beyond words that God has reconciled me to Himself. How incredible is a God who gives us abundantly more than what we deserve even when act like adult-sized toddlers?! Praise the Lord for a God Who continually forgives when I repent!
Kaylan Wells is married to the the wonderful John Wells who is the IT Expert for the Northwest District for the University of Florida. She is a stay at home mom to Jack, 3, and Emma, 1 and during her free time, teaches piano lessons on the side. In 2010, the Wells' family moved to Tallahassee and shortly after discovered CityChurch.
