[City Speak]

by Meghan Bach

Assistant to the Executive Pastor

Two years ago, God called me to move to Tallahassee. A California native and a Sophomore in college, I was living and loving life in San Diego. I had been to Florida before, and I when I was first approached about the idea, I thought it was ridiculous. Me, leave my "perfect" life and move to a strange place I had never been to? No thanks, God.

Much to my discomfort, and my family and friends thinking I was crazy, I moved to Tallahassee...to which I nicknamed "Tallanasty" (sorry, locals). I cried for months, missing my family and friends. I was extremely culture shocked and ripped out of my comfort zone. I was so angry at God for taking away everything I loved so much and sticking me in a place where I was sure I would spend the rest of my college years miserable.

I walked into Godby High School in August of 2009 to go check out City Church (back then, The Well). I sat in the back hoping no one would notice the girl who didn't know anyone. Dean was in the middle of a series called, "Strangely Normal", and I couldn't help but think that it felt strangely normal to sit in that auditorium. For whatever reason, I felt like I belonged there. For the first time in months, I knew I had found a bright light in Tallahassee, saving grace. Ever since that day I have been a regular attender, and a year ago became a First Impressions volunteer, our very first week in the Warehouse. For the past few years God has used Dean Inserra to speak the speak to me, and to soften my heart about a place I held so much bitterness towards. God has shown me He had bigger plans for me, and He knew all along why He was sending me here.

Now I very thankfully (and still to my disbelief) am on staff at City Church. I get to work with a group of people that have forever changed my life, and my heart. I have seen this church grow immensely, and I'm so proud to be a small part of what God is doing in Tallahassee. My advice? If God tells you to go, GO. If it sounds crazy, it probably is. If you're afraid, trust in Him. I'm not saying it's going to be easy, or even that I'm great at listening to God. All I know is that being called to Tallahassee against my own plans, was the best thing that's ever happened to me.

"You will keep in perfect peace those whose mind is steadfast, because they trust in You." - Isaiah 26:3.
