[City Speak]

Viva Colombia

On August 7, 2011 a team of 14 City Church members departed on a 10 day journey to Cartagena, Colombia. Their mission? Share the Gospel.

Now I don't know about you, but when I think of Colombia I think of two things- Pablo Escobar and coffee. I don't know a thing about coffee because I don't drink it, but I know plenty about Mr. Escobar. Therefore, my initial thoughts of Colombia included drugs, gangs, violence, kidnapping, sex, etc. Let's just say everything that would elicit fear from a sheltered American girl. And fear is what I traveled with.

Upon arriving in Colombia, my fears were swept away and my heart began breaking for what I saw. Much of Cartagena was poverty stricken and people lacked the basic needs for survival. What I saw as devastation, they saw as blessings. A 600 square foot house to me was uncomfortably small, but to them it was a safe place to sleep at night. In my eyes, no washer and dryer meant hours of hand washing and hanging, but they were thankful they even had clothing to hang. Despite their lack of necessities, I never heard one person complain about their circumstances. It was evident that they had an unconditional love for God and people, and an unwavering thankfulness for salvation.

Prior to going to Colombia, I had this mindset that God was an American native that traveled with
missionaries to other countries and came back to America when they did; a mindset that suggests
that we bring God to people when we get there; a mindset that denied God the glory for already being there; a mindset that elevated man and what he can do for Cartagena over what God is already doing there. Although I have never doubted His omnipotence and omniscience, I often forget about it. After my experiences in Colombia, I'm aware more than ever how truly big our God is; that He is alive in Cartagena as He is in Tallahassee; that He is a God that is worthy of my praise no matter my circumstances; and that He goes before us and I have nothing to fear.

"The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged." Deuteronomy 31:8 (NIV)
