This Sunday - Obadiah and the Minors
As Dean begins his vacation, our Executive Pastor, Matthew Robinson picks up with our current series, "The Minors." He will be continuing the stories of the 12 minor prophets of the Old Testament that often go unnoticed.
This Sunday, Matthew takes a closer look at the shortest book of the Old Testament, Obadiah. We'll be looking at the destructive nature of pride, and how without Christ, we're headed for the same fall as a great and mighty land. We hope you can join us this Sunday at 11:15 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

City Speak - Alumni Special

by Jessica Glass "O how He loves us..." Almost 3 years ago my husband Austin and I packed up our lives, left Tallahassee, and headed for New Orleans. I thought I was ready for the move, that I could handle leaving all my friends and family. I thought I was strong, independent. The joke was on me. I was miserable, sad, and angry. I really was not ready. It was not until January of this year that I realized why and began to make a real effort to confront my issues and resolve my anger. I had allowed myself to think that I could handle all my emotions on my own. I had decided I didn't really need to lean on my Savior. I started teaching at a new school in August and decided to help coach soccer. This was definitely God's doing. I loved playing in high school, and I loved coaching, so it seemed like the perfect fit for me. I was having a rough year doing it all on my own, and I was hoping that coaching would alleviate some of my stress. In the beginning, that was not the case. My attitude was terrible. And it showed.
Lucky for me, and everyone around me, I was coaching with a strong Christian man. One night after practice we somehow got on the subject of my attitude. He told me "Jessica, if you are in a bad mood, the whole team has to be in a bad mood." That comment reached deep down in my heart. I recalled that one of my girls told me that I was cynical and pessimistic, and at the time, I was shocked. That is not how I would describe myself. Well, the coach began to pry into my life and ask me what the issue was. I told him that I had been angry for a long time because I was not in Florida with my family and friends. If he talked to any of my Florida friends they would not know me anymore. I was not the same Jessica. Then he asked me how my relationship with Christ was, and I had to admit to him it was not good at all. He told me that I needed to fall back in love with Jesus, that of course I was miserable without Him. On my way home, I cried. Slowly but surely, God was breaking my heart and showing me that I had been trying and failing to do all of this on my own. I knew he was right. I had been running from the only person that could truly make me happy, Jesus. I prayed and asked Jesus to forgive me, to allow me to fall in love with the only one that could really change my heart. It took me some time and a lot of prayers, but I know that God has allowed me to come back and be who I really am. He loved me enough to help change my heart. "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5). This is where I am now, trusting the Lord with my emotions and my heart. Being who He created me to be, a woman of God who is joyful and in love with Him. "O how he loves us..." I am so grateful that He does. |
