This Sunday - Easter On The Moon!

It's finally here!  We will hold two services at The Moon on Lafayette Street this Sunday at 11:15 am and 6 pm.  City Church Kids will be in full force during both services!

Dean will be sharing an Easter message like you've never heard before.  This is NOT a Sunday to miss!  We will see you and remember to invite and bring all your friends!

This Friday we will also hold a Good Friday service at the Warehouse at 7:00 p.m. We are encouraging our congregation to fast that day and to share the Lord's Supper together as our first meal.

City Speak

d

by John Wells

I grew up in a nominally Christian home. We attended church at Easter, Christmas, and perhaps a few more times throughout the year if someone died or times got tough. My father was an alcoholic and my parents divorced when I was young and while both claimed faith in Christ, there was no real evidence of it - even as an unbelieving teenager I could see that.   Once, as a teenager, I was invited to a charismatic church event by a friend I worked with and decided to attend-the first like that I had ever been to.  People were speaking in tongues and falling on the floor and it all seemed pretty wild. I remember another friend of mine was there as a member of the church's band. He was a pot head and a drunk that I had gone to parties with many times. I pulled him aside at one point and asked, "is all this real?" He pointed to his chest and said, "you just know it right here."  I remember going home that night, disappointed and disillusioned, and deciding that if that is all Christianity offered then it was little more than tradition at best and a  security blanket at worst and I wanted nothing to do with it.

Over the next few years, I accepted and became more comfortable with the idea of atheism.  Meanwhile, God had gotten a hold of my father's life a few years prior. He became sober, started a rescue mission to help others with alcohol and drug addictions, and dedicated his life to Christ. The genuine quality of his faith made me uncomfortable and I began to reconsider spiritual matters.  Finally one night he asked me to simply pray that if I really wanted to seek God that God would reveal Himself to me.  A series of events led me to a church on Wednesday evening.  I slipped in a little late and sat in the back to avoid having to talk with church people.  The pastor spoke about how difficult it was to reach people my age. Everything the pastor said that night seemed to be the story of my life and my journey away from the faith.  God broke my heart that night. Over the next few months I attended few more services, and each time God moved in my heart in a powerful way. I eventually packed up my things and moved back to Florida to be near my family and learn more about this God thing. I couldn't put my finger on an exact point in time where I came to believe; I really think it was more of a process. I felt more like the man in Mark 9 who said, "Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!"

We celebrate Easter this week and there are probably hundreds of people in this city who are right where I was. Invite them. Many will come to church just because it's Easter. Many may come just because we're having a service at The Moon. Pray for them. Live the grace that God has shown you. Pray for Dean as he brings the message because it's God's word that will transform their hearts (Rom 10:17). Walking through the doors of the church has no value apart from God doing a work of grace in their lives. They may come thinking they are seeking truth and find that Someone greater has been seeking them all along.

(W. Nathan Lee, City Church's resident first team PowerPoint operator and backup drummer won the "Rename the 'Well Said' Column" contest with his entry of "City Speak."  Congratulations, Nathan!)
