Well Said
by Rachel Rust "The Next Step" Ever since I can remember, I always had a goal that I was working towards: from making great grades so that I could get into the "best" university in Florida (at the time, I thought that was located in Gainesville, but I was very wrong), to graduating college suma cum laude and debt-free, to getting a job in my career field, to earning my professional certification in HR. I always had something that I was pursuing and that defined a large part of who I was and where I was going. And then one day, not too long ago, I realized that I had achieved all of my goals...and didn't have any more goals directly lined up to pursue. I was at a loss as to what next step to take...and so I didn't take any steps. I prayed and asked that God would reveal his "big plans" to me and I waited and waited and waited. And in the midst of all of this, I realized that this was the first time in my life that I was looking towards God to reveal HIS next step for me, not my own. Proverbs 3: 5-6 took on a whole new meaning: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." I came to a place where I was willing to go wherever, whenever and do whatever He had for me. I was ready and waiting for the word, "Go." My own plans had shaped my future decisions for such a long time, and it was so freeing to know that my future was in much better hands. As a result of this increased trust in God's plans for me, I had a shift in focus. Instead of waiting around for the future to happen, I started seeking what God had for me each and every day. I knew that He had a purpose for me at work (through the relationships that I was building), at church (through serving as a high school youth group leader) and with my friends. I was living the dream as I poured out all that I had into the people that surrounded me and saw God working through me in their lives. It was awesome. I was finally at peace with where my life was and with the fact that I had no idea what was coming. And then everything changed. I met this amazing godly man that I fell in love with and in a few short weeks my plans (and name) will be changing. I received a message a few weeks ago from an older woman at my church who had been praying for me throughout this season and I wanted to share a few of her words: "I was just thinking about how not too long ago you were wondering what was next for you and your life - changes at work, change jobs, relocate, etc? It is so refreshing to see God's plan unfolding as you have trusted Him." I am so glad that I did not decide to sit back and wait for God to one day reveal His big plan for my life, because I (and others) would have missed out on all that He had purposed for me each one of those days. (Rachel will be marrying our Executive Pastor, Dr. Matthew Robinson, this May 7th!) |
