Well Said

d

by Deborah Merritt

I am a Registered Nurse that has served in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for the past twenty four years. A NICU is a place where babies that are born prematurely or even babies born at term (delivered when they were actually due to be born), and those babies born sick or with birth defects come to receive medical care immediately following their birth.  I use the word serve because I feel very blessed that God has placed me in such a rich mission field to serve him and witness His miracles every day.  Like God's word, faith, hope and love are an integral part of this complex environment.

One family I took care of demonstrated the faith of believing in God's word and promises. The mom had experienced health problems during her teenage years that resulted in the doctors telling her that she would never be able to conceive children. This mom had a very strong faith and said "no problem, God will provide me with children when the time is right". God shares with us in Luke 17:6, "If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, be uprooted and planted in the sea, and it will obey you." After several years of marriage, we were all able to witness God's promises and fulfillment of this mom's faith, she delivered her first son! The doctors said they couldn't explain how she had this child, but it would not happen again. She stayed faithful and said, if He gave me one child, He will provide more children. God went on to bless this family with three sons and their family continues to share God's faithfulness and goodness to those around them.

To be able to witness the faith and hope through a child's eyes is always a thrilling event. Recently I cared for a family who had a young child who wanted desperately to be a big brother. When his mom became pregnant everyone was so happy until she miscarried the baby. It was very sad for these parents to tell this little boy that he would not be a big brother for now. Much to their surprise, he informed them that God had really given them two babies and there was still a baby in his mommy. He was so persistent, the mom returned for a check -up where the doctor and the parents learned that yes, this must have been an undiagnosed twin pregnancy and yes, she was still pregnant. Recently, I had the privilege to take care of this special baby and hear of this family's miracle! Hebrews 11:1 states "Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see."

By allowing me to serve in the NICU, God has allowed me to provide encouragement to people I encounter and care for while also being blessed by witnessing His miracles every day. I encourage each of you to look around you and find the miracles God places in front of you every day and feel His love and presence!
