Well Said

d

by Megan Graham

When was the last time you sat and really listened to someone tell their story?  With no judgment, no other passing thoughts, just you and the person and their story?  I recently went to see Naomi Tutu speak.  An activist and a woman of Aparteid in South Africa she challenged the audience to be the individuals who recognize the humanity of others, particularly those we see as enemies.  She went further to say that we as humanity must start by opening our ears and minds and to the many stories.  My first thoughts led me to the individuals that I met and listened to in New Orleans following Katrina.  Generations worth of families, many who had never been educated who were seen as the enemy of the city because they lived in the poorest areas and were "worthless".  These individuals lost everything but they had their stories.  At first I got caught up in the fact that I was there to work, not to listen.  On my third trip, our leader pointed out that it was more important to listen to the stories then drive as many nails home as possible.  It was there that I learned to listen.

When Naomi spoke I thought back on my experiences in New Orleans and how I often get so caught up in myself and my story that I forget to look around at those around me and take time to hear their stories.  Every time I think about that, God remind me of the moment that I did listen.  It was the moment that I came to know Him.  I would have missed one of the most important moments in my life.  Think about what would have happened if Jesus hadn't have listened to the cries of the blind man or shared the parables.  Remember to listen carefully as Jesus may be trying to reveal himself through the stories of others.

Psalm 107: 1-9

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
   his love endures forever.

2 Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story-
those he redeemed from the hand of the foe,
3 those he gathered from the lands,
from east and west, from north and south.

4 Some wandered in desert wastelands,
finding no way to a city where they could settle.
5 They were hungry and thirsty,
   and their lives ebbed away.
6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
to a city where they could settle.
8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love
and his wonderful deeds for mankind,
9 for he satisfies the thirsty
and fills the hungry with good things.
