Well Said

d
"Yo Ms. Herritt, u funna b da JAM! Fo realz!" by Haley Herritt

No, I am not going to talk about some crazy life-changing event. (Unless you call being a 6 foot giant since the age of 12 an "event." Or in my case, social nightmare.) No, I am not married. (Yay. Valentines Day. Whoo. Get. Excited.) And, no, I do not have any kids....well, none of my own. Instead I have 142 children, young adults, lil' homies and homegirls, my peeps, tiny "Bieberettes"...you get the picture.
They grace my presence every day, Monday through Friday, starting around 7:20am. And together we try to tackle the dreaded subject of Algebra (insert appropriate noises here, tires screeching, babies crying, large crowd boo-ing, etc.).

Much to their dismay, Algebra is not easy. For them, it is often not a priority either. And to me that way of thinking is "scraight up craaa craaa!" Or for those of you who do not speak teenager, that is "straight up crazy!" How could you not love what I love? The quadratic formula? Factoring? FOIL-ing? Graphing Linear Inequalities? Dividing Monomials? This all sounds so wonderful! Right?

Wrong. But what I found to be interesting is that their lack-luster attitude about math stems from a lack of understanding about the subject. They are unaware of the many facets of mathematics and the ways it will contribute to their lives in the very near future. And that math can be fun! And enjoyable! So, then how is it fair for me to be frustrated with them when they do not "get it" and do not care.

I feel that same level of frustration in my relationships with my co-workers, students and friends who are not believers. Why can they not "get it" and what can I do to help make them "get it?" I have been struggling with this for a few months now, but it has recently become very clear to me what I can do. I can be me. I can be the God-loving-and-yet-God-fearing woman that I am. Because it is not me that will change their hearts. It's God; it's all God. And if I am going about this the right way, then I am doing it through God and through his word and his love. And it starts with prayer, and listening to what God wants me to do to help bring these people to know Christ. Praying that God would prepare me to be the person who shows God's love, compassion and grace. Recognizing that the only thing that separates me from a non-believer is the cross.

Have I been working on it? Yes. Is it easy, am I perfect at it, and do I get quick results? No, it's not at all. My non-Christian friends are unaware of what their lives can be like once they come to know the Lord. They are unaware of how amazing God's love is, and how blessed we are to be saved by grace. I can't expect them to "get it" right away when they haven't seen or heard the word. But I do expect to keep working on them, praying for them, engaging them in conversations and building relationships with them so that they see that my faith is genuine, sincere, and consistent. Through the good and the bad, I (attempt) to always have it glorifying God.

So I will be a teacher, day in and day out. Teaching my students that math is the JAM, while showing everyone I come in contact with that true joy and happiness comes from the Lord. Also, that those actions and attitude towards life are consistently faithful. And that they too can be apart of this life, because He is there, ready and waiting for them, fo' free! N dats wuts up! ☺
