Well Said

d
by Adam Hill

Do I pray unceasingly or do I pray conveniently? Do I read my bible with consistency or espn.com multiple times a day? Am I kind to people or do I show little patience with them? Do I love my wife like Christ loves the church or am I often the one who is selfish and asking for her sacrifice? Do I trust God or my own abilities? Do I live a life of worship or comfort? You see the list could go on and on. It can even get overwhelming with how few things I do that is actually Christ-like. It can be discouraging. It can be frustrating. It can make you apathetic because you feel like there's no use in trying. Have you ever been there or am I the only one who can't seem to get this right?

For some reason more times than not - and certainly more than I would like to admit - I find the worst in things. I look for the worst in people. I make the worst of my situations. When in reality I am so blessed and it simply takes stopping and looking at the bigger picture. I feel at times our flesh is drawn to the scars, our eyes are drawn to the brokenness, our ears to the dissonance and our noses to the stench of life, love, and people. Why is it so hard to see all the many blessings around me, all the grace that I've been given, the love I've been shown? I started asking myself why this is. The only thing I can conclude is that I simply forget what the Gospel says. In my heart of hearts I know that Christ is all I need to measure up, but so often I forget that Truth. So there are times when I try and realize that I can't; that's when my heart becomes hardened, because like the rich young ruler in Matthew (Matt 19:16-26), I'm trying to do things to measure up on my own accord.

So the real question is not how well I accomplish the proverbial Christian checklist; it's do I genuinely believe Christ is all we need, that His grace is enough, and His love never fails? Because when I allow myself to experience His grace and His love it is far easier for me to extend that grace and love to others. It's possible for me to see people through the eyes of Christ.  Phillip Yancy said, "The solution to sin is not to impose an ever-stricter code of behavior. It is to know God."

Sometimes I think it seems too simple to be the solution. That's when the words of one of my favorite songs ring in my head. It sings, "I may be weak, but Your spirit is strong in me, my flesh may fail, but my God you never will". That may seem disheartening at first because we're wired to want to be the hero of our own stories, but I find rest in knowing there's nothing I can do without the strength of Christ in me. In Romans 2 it reads that His kindness is what leads us to repentance, not a tighter, more legalistic discipline. I don't know about you, but I know for me that trying harder is only going to take me so far, it takes tasting and seeing that the Lord is good (Psalm 34:8). So if I can truly experience Christ, understand His grace, and know His love, I will have no other choice but to respond in worship with my life, for His glory. So rest, know and enjoy Him today.

Psalm 46:10 "Cease striving, and know that He is God."
