Well Said
 by Denise Mayo
"Jiminy Cricket!"
Most of us have understood the concept of a conscience--the angel on our shoulder--since we were introduced to Jiminy Cricket in the story of Pinocchio. In theory, everyone has a Jiminy who points out the right thing to do and discourages wrong behavior. If we ignore Jiminy's instruction, we feel guilty over making the poor choice he warned us against. Live and learn; repeat. Oh, if only it were so simple!
Recently, I made a bad choice. It was what anyone would consider minor, but it set off horrific pangs of guilt. As my conscience began to consume me, I turned to scripture for guidance in how to deal. What I discovered is that my good ol' Jiminy is quite unreliable, because he's often not in tune with God. At times, my conscience does not condemn me at all when it should. Sometimes I exaggerate and tell "white lies" without thinking twice. I am habitually lazy and selfish, and I rationalize it. And Jiminy stands by, mute. At other times, my conscience is overactive and distorted. I beat myself up over having fleeting unholy thoughts. Jiminy holds me captive, and I feel defeated.
Neither of these is the way we who are free in Christ ought to think. Instead of depressed, we should feel both convicted over our sins and downright joyful over the hope God gives us. He promises us He will be our strength where we are weak, He will purify our hearts, and He will sanctify us if we just keep running the race. So, I am working to find consistency of conscience--not lackadaisical, not selectively attentive, not damning. And the reason it's crucial that I get my conscience in line with how God views me is captured in 1 John 3:21-22: "Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him." The truthfulness of our conscience--that convicting feeling in our hearts--determines the legitimacy of our confidence before God. We've got to calibrate our conscience so that our assurance is real. How? My strategy is to pray, study the Word, commune with believers.
May God help us recognize sin for what it is, recognize grace for what it is, and use His standards as our guide.
