Well Said

d
by Freddy Branham

The story of the Prodigal Son is a familiar one, a commonly used example of God's love and mercy toward His wayward children. This is the version starring me as that wandering sinner on his way back
home, restored by God's unconditional love.

Growing up in a Christian home, I was fortunate to be raised by Godly parents and active in a large church. Sunday School, choir practice, mission trips...when the doors were open, that's where you
would find me. But while I knew every bible story and hymn by heart, it often felt like I was just checking off a to-do list of good deeds. So when I packed up to leave for college, the time had come
to experience what I had been missing in the real world. I started at FSU in August of 1994 and decided to check my faith at the door. From that moment on, I was going to be the one in charge of my life and was convinced that I would determine my future plans. Besides, there was hardly any time to spare for God considering my involvement with classes, fraternity life, and a serious girlfriend.

After a few years of making my own way, I was an educated graduate with two degrees in hand during a thriving economy and job market. The wandering continued as I moved for work to Detroit, then Washington DC, ultimately landing in Denver to marry my college sweetheart. Throughout all of these significant career and relationship decisions, I was sure that I knew enough to make the right choice independently. However, these two areas of my life that I thought I was controlling had failed tremendously and it dawned on me that I could no longer do it by myself. In humility and with a serious need for forgiveness, I returned to Florida with a goal to make Him the center again.

Instead of a new checklist, though, this time I was greeted with a Father's joy to have me home. It is still a challenge as I face my shortcomings, but that faith I had previously tucked away has since grown into a real relationship with Him that promotes grace over guilt. Whether my story sounds unique or typical, hopefully it shows a real example of the incredible love and patience that He has for us. So regardless of how God has engineered the ups and downs in your life, embrace the opportunity to glorify Him in them all.
