Well Said
by Jonathan Stephens
It's
late September, school is in full swing, and Summer is getting smaller and
smaller in the back of our minds. For most of us, all that's left of the Summer
are photographs and stories of the trips taken, places seen, and good times
had. Being a twenty something, (I just had a birthday, so don't worry about
which half of the 20's) local, Tallahassee-and I don't exactly get a break for
Summer. I am a state worker who puts in my 40 hrs a week regardless of the time
of year. And I know what you might be wondering, Yes! This really is what you
have to look forward to after school. Before you freak out and start to change
your major yet again though, I quote Kanye "an lemme finish." This
Summer I had the amazing privilege of not going to a foreign land and working
with under-privileged kids, or seeing the world/country/state in all it's
splendor but, of staying right here in Tallahassee and watching an old
storefront, and empty warehouse become a home for the people of The Well. I got
to see families and people and of all ages and backgrounds come together and
work literally around the clock at times, to see the realization of two weeks
ago come to fruition. I can't think of a season in my life where I have been
more encouraged by being a part of something like what we have here at The
Well. I've
had the unique opportunity to be a part of The Well from two different
viewpoints- as an occasional attendee and
a member. For the last year and a half I have helped fill in from time to time
with the band at The Well, and while I was immensely involved at my other
church at the time, I couldn't help but feel drawn to The Well (no water pun
intended). I had been serving at my
church at the time for 10 years and was involved in almost every aspect of the
word. If you would have asked me a year ago if I would ever be at another
church, I would have answered "no" without hesitation. But regardless of all
the excuses I could come up with, God kept impressing on my heart that He
wanted me at The Well. I can remember thinking right after I had made the
decision to attend The Well full time that I had made a mistake, and that there
was no way I was ever going to feel the same connection and sense of belonging
I felt serving with my previous church. The last 4 ½ months have been nothing
but proof that I am where God wants me to be, and that is a great place to be. Dean
has made it very clear that the buildings themselves are not the church, and he
is exactly right. But, I have been witness to a perfect example of what the
church really is through the renovating of these buildings this summer. So even
though the buildings are just walls, they have already been used (through the
people that comprise the church) to impact people, myself included. I have made
so many friendships the last few months and I know many more are to come as we
see growth numerically and as we make His name known in this city! I am so
encouraged about what I know God is going to do in Tallahassee through The
Well. Acts 5:17-41. (Read the whole story if you get
a chance, but I'll summarize.) Peter and the apostles had been preaching in the
temple and were arrested and facing death just for doing what God had called
them to do. All the members of the court (The Sanhedrin) wanted to kill them
but, one member, a Pharisee (a legal teacher) named Gamaliel said these words, "38 Therefore, in the present
case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or
activity is of human origin, it will fail. 39 But if it is from God,
you will not be able to stop these men; you
will only find yourselves fighting against God." If even
a Pharisee (who the Bible makes very clear were not followers of Christ) knows
that if it is of God it cannot be stopped, how much more should we as believers
find comfort in that promise. So, take heart in knowing that if what The Well
is about is of God, then it has no choice but to succeed. And that makes me
excited about the future here at The Well!
