Well Said

Jerk Like Me
by Chris Pope

So it seems I'm a jerk. And I'm not saying that is a false perception, but more like I am coming to terms with it. John 1:14 says Jesus came, "...in truth and grace," and that has been a crutch for me lately. I like to think of the church as being too grace-heavy and not enough truth. With that line of thinking, I err on the truth side to counteract the grace tendencies of American Christianity. I will admit that being too truth based is wrong, as is being too grace based. As followers of Christ, we are called to be in the middle: a balance, like Christ, in truth and grace.

That being said, I have a real beef with the idea that Christians have to be friends with everyone they meet. The Bible calls us to be at peace with all men in Romans 12:18 then, get this: if it is possible for you. Zinger! We aren't supposed to falsify relationships with people if we don't like them. Putting on the mask of liking someone is being dishonest if you don't like them. Don't be a jerk like me; we are still called to love them, and even more so if it is somebody you don't like (see verses 20 and 21). But being at peace with someone doesn't mean torture yourself. Love them, but don't fake it.

And even more so is the idea of Christians being happy all the time. False. We are given emotions for a reason. James 1:19 says we are to be, "slow to anger", not that we should be happy all the time, and certainly not that we should never be angry. It merely dictates the anger should bring about God's righteous in our and others lives. We can experience and wield our emotions to expand the kingdom. Don't restrain or kill yourself because of a false perception that we are called to be "happy". Don't mistake that with joy. Love people. Balance truth and grace. Use you emotions for His glory.

About The Well

The Well is a church that is committed to connecting with the unchurched community of Tallahassee. It is the desire of the Well to create an atmosphere that is engaging to this generation in the twenty-first century. While the culture of Tallahassee is always changing, we believe that the message of Jesus Christ is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. The Well is a church that will speak an everlasting truth in an ever-changing culture.
