Well Said
by Christi Merritt I recently graduated nursing school at the University of Central
Florida and since that was an enormous part of my
life until the last month I thought I would share something I learned through
that experience. A professor once offered an analogy that has stuck with me for
the last couple of years. The analogy was, there are two parts of a bacon and
egg breakfast, the chicken and the pig. The chicken was involved but the pig
was committed. A little corny I know but think about it. The professor was
sharing some wisdom regarding relationships. This wisdom can be used when describing Christians'
relationship with the church. As Christians, we are called to be committed to
the local church. Often Christians want to be "involved" and claim commitment,
but do not want to make the sacrifices associated with the commitment. True
commitment also comes with responsibility. In the next few months as The Well grows and makes some
enormous changes to better reach the community; we as Christians are going to
have to demonstrate commitment. Commitment can be demonstrated through:
sacrificial giving, time and prayer. The Well is going to be successful as long
as that is God's will, which also means people that choose to only be "involved"
can be used for His will however, the "committed" Christians will take full
advantage of the resources God has given them to fulfill God's will. The difference between involvement and commitment may be
difficult for others to observe but as Dean always says, "Who are we trying to
please, the person next to us or God?" As long as we always remember that, then
our hearts will be in the right place and the commitment will follow. So I
challenge you to think about how can you take responsibility during this
transition time. What level of commitment are you willing to make? So when you
consider your involvement or commitment, are you a chicken or a pig?
