Well Said

by Andi Ratliff

Rejoice in the Lord always... I rejoice in a lot of things. I rejoice in my husband, my family, and my friends. I rejoice in chocolate chip cookies, I rejoice in a good book, a strong cup of coffee and a new pair of shoes. I rejoice when my favorite team wins a game or when I achieve a personal goal... and sometimes I rejoice in the Lord. This is something I am learning how to do more and more each day.

This verse from Philippians 4:4 is on my wall in my home. I see it every day. I look at it each time I leave my house and yet I still have trouble putting it into practice. Paul doesn't say "you should rejoice in the Lord" or "God is so great that He deserves that you rejoice in what He's done and who He is". While both of these are true, what Paul gives us is a command; and just in case we didn't get it the first time he says it again.

"Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!"

He goes on to say "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God that transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." We aren't simply expected to rejoice in the Lord when we are feeling close to him or enjoying the things He's blessed us with. We have reason and a responsibility to rejoice in him always.

What better chance do we have to be an example of the unfathomable power and love of our Savior than when we truly rejoice in tough times? Some days we are not brave enough or strong enough or patient enough, but we know the one who is and always will be. Some days we are selfish, prideful and far too busy, but in those times God offers us forgiveness and a peace that passes all understanding.

Recently this verse has had a large role in my life. I've found in these few words a great challenge and great reward. Shortly after committing to make it a priority to find and display joy in the Lord, I had an epically bad day at work. I'm sure you've experienced one of these before; the kind where you want to take out your frustration on everyone you can. I sent my husband a text message telling him I was really struggling and asking him to pray for me. In my self-centeredness I expected sympathy and an encouragement that he knew I could do it and things would get better. Instead he sent back "Rejoice in the Lord always, if for no other reason than a bloody cross and an empty tomb."

I pray that this week you and I find joy in our loving Father and perfect Savior regardless of our circumstances and that through our joy we bring Glory to God.
