The Well
This Sunday

Since the beginning of the year, we've been on a journey looking at who Jesus is. But after he lived, died, and rose again, now what? What has He called us to do next? This Sunday, as we celebrate our last gathering at Godby High School Dean will conclude our "What's Next?" series.

Well Said

by Adrienne Butz

Experience true satisfaction in Christ! It is an easy thing to say but something I continually have to learn to do over and over. Recently I have realized how much I look to things of this world to satisfy me. When you are in school it is the next semester, when you are single it is dating, when you are dating it is getting married, when you get married it is having kids, when you have kids it is finally getting them to sleep through the night, getting them out of diapers, and then getting them out of the house!

God has given us many great gifts in this life! But we must realize that apart from the Lord we can have no good thing (Psalm 16:2). Yet many of us look to these good things apart from God to satisfy us! And that is when we are in danger of turning those good things in our lives into idols. I will never forget going to a Buddhist temple in China and watching people bow down to the idols there. I wondered how they could not see how empty and meaningless it was. But then I went downtown in our city and found myself shopping and lusting after all things Western. That's when it suddenly hit me that I wasn't much different than those people in the temple except that my idols look a lot more acceptable!

So I believe the key to experiencing true satisfaction no matter what our circumstances is finding our satisfaction in Christ. When we do it is the only way we will be able to see the portion God assigns us through His eyes. When we have a lot we recognize that it is through Christ. When we have little or trying circumstances we look to Christ purposes for it in our lives. And we have to see with the eyes of eternity and realize that in the end we all have a delightful inheritance waiting for us that will never spoil or fade!

God is so good to us that He will allow us glimpses of satisfaction on this earth but ultimately we have to know we will never experience true satisfaction until we reach heaven! All moments of satisfaction on this earth are laced with a longing for a deeper, elusive satisfaction. Your wedding day will have some not so perfect moments, your new house will have its flaws, and even your walk with Christ here on earth at its greatest moments doesn't leave us fully satisfied. Which leads me to believe that C.S. Lewis had it right when he said,

"If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world." ~C.S. Lewis
