The Well is a church that is committed to connecting with the unchurched community of Tallahassee. It is the desire of the Well to create an atmosphere that is engaging to this generation in the twenty-first century. While the culture of Tallahassee is always changing, we believe that the message of Jesus Christ is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. The Well is a church that will speak an everlasting truth in an ever-changing culture.

"For the single most important institution shaping Western culture
is the university. It is at the university that our future political
leaders, our journalists, our teachers, our business executives, our
lawyers, our artists, will be trained. It is at the university that
they will formulate or, more likely, simply absorb the worldview that
will shape their lives. And since these are the opinion-makers and
leaders who shape our culture, our worldview that they imbibe at the
university will be the one that shapes our culture. If the Christian
worldview can be restored to a place of prominence and respect at the
university, it will have a leavening effect throughout society. If we
change the university, we change our culture through those who shape
culture." (Moreland & Craig)

WELL SAID
"Psalm 51" by Bryan Szendel
How many times have you sworn that you'll "never do it again" to
God? I find this disappointing phrase
come out of my mouth and float around in my head all too frequently.
Let's face it, we all suck at repentance.
1 "Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out
my transgressions.
2 Wash me thoroughly from my
iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! 3 For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is ever before me. 4 Against you, you only have I
sinned and done what is evil in your sight, So that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your
judgment. 5 Behold, I was brought forth in
iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. 6 Behold, you delight in truth in
the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. 7 Purge me with hyssop, and I
shall be clean; wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. 8 Let me hear joy and gladness;
let the bones that you have broken rejoice. 9 Hide your face from my sins,
and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O
God, and renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from your
presence and take not your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your
salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. 13 Then I will teach
transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. 14 Deliver me from
bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, And my tongue will sing aloud of your
righteousness. 15 O Lord, open my lips, and my
mouth will declare your praise. 16 For you will not delight in
sacrifice, or I would give it; You will not be pleased with a burnt
offering. 17 The sacrifices of God are a
broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God you
will not despise. 18 Do good to Zion in your good
pleasure; build up the walls of Jerusalem; 19 Then will you delight in right
sacrifices, in burnt offerings and whole burnt offerings; Then bulls will be offered on your altar." -Psalm 51
How would our relationship with Jesus be different if we tackled our
sin like David did here? First, he
acknowledged the weight of his sin before God by pleading for mercy (v. 1).
If there were not drastic consequences and judgment for sin, David would
not have needed any mercy. That is
first, we have to come to a realization
of the dire seriousness of our sin (v. 1-3). Next, we need an accurate view of the perfect God we sin against (v. 4). Our sin is against God and God alone! He's the only one who matters. He also has every right to judge us because
he has demanded perfection that we cannot obtain ourselves. When we change our mindset to the truth about
who God really is, we shouldn't even have to humble ourselves because it
happens naturally (v. 6). As a sinner in the presence of a righteous
God, with an accurate view of that righteous God, a broken and humble spirit is
not hard to obtain. Then, we need a
changed heart, a God-changed heart (v. 7-12). Our hearts literally have to be remade. Our hearts are broken and sick and we need to
be reset with new desires (v. 8). God creates this change and the Holy Spirit
restores the joy of salvation through Jesus Christ (v. 12).
Thank God for Jesus being the "right sacrifice" that is actually
pleasing to God! He is the only reason
we can look to God in our desperate state and still be saved. God is merciful. Last,
we respond to the joyful truth of forgiveness and a regenerated heart with
praise to the righteous God and an eagerness to tell others about our
experience with this same merciful God (v. 13). God literally takes delight in us being
broken before him in worship because we are so in tune of who He is contrasted
by who we are as forgiven sinners that our praise is genuine (v. 17).
(Note that in v. 10 he
uses the word "renew" implying that there was a right spirit in him at a time
before, but he lost it because he trusted in sin and not God. That previous "right spirit" needs constant
renewal and this is what repentance really is - Constant reliance on the
heart-changing renewal that only God can provide through Jesus.)
Through personal experience, repentance can be one of the most joyful
times as a Christian. When you finally
let go of the sin that you are holding onto to, reach for the redemptive
freedom that God provides through Jesus, His greatness becomes so real that you
have to respond! And when you do finally
reach the point where you respond in thankful praise, it is very sweet.
(Bryan Szendel, from Jacksonville, is a freshmen at The Florida State University.)

1 Peter 2:2 tells all believers "Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation." In a secular culture that denies exclusive claims of truth, it is more difficult than ever to have gospel-centered conversations with unbelieving friends. It is also common to find Christians who are uncertain about what they truly believe.
At the Well we are announcing the creation of Crave, a monthly evening of studying God's Word together. Do not miss out on this exciting opportunity to explore, study, discuss, and understand the faith we claim to follow.
The first Crave will be on Monday, March 16th at 7:00 p.m. at Matthew Robinson's house.
