The Well is a church that is committed to connecting with the unchurched community of Tallahassee. It is the desire of the Well to create an atmosphere that is engaging to this generation in the twenty-first century. While the culture of Tallahassee is always changing, we believe that the message of Jesus Christ is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. The Well is a church that will speak an everlasting truth in an ever-changing culture.

"For the single most important institution shaping Western culture
is the university. It is at the university that our future political
leaders, our journalists, our teachers, our business executives, our
lawyers, our artists, will be trained. It is at the university that
they will formulate or, more likely, simply absorb the worldview that
will shape their lives. And since these are the opinion-makers and
leaders who shape our culture, our worldview that they imbibe at the
university will be the one that shapes our culture. If the Christian
worldview can be restored to a place of prominence and respect at the
university, it will have a leavening effect throughout society. If we
change the university, we change our culture through those who shape
culture." (Moreland & Craig)

WELL SAID
"New Year and a New Place" by J. W. Parsons
I was exposed to a question a while back about my "third
place." The idea is that everybody
spends the majority of their time in three places: with their family (at home), at work
and at a third place. The question I was asked was "what is my third place?" I didn't have an answer and I had never really
thought of this idea before. In hindsight I had many third places--but I had no
third place that I was going to to be intentional in building relationships that
will possibly lead people to Christ.
I am convinced of this idea that is not my own genius.
What if we each had a place where we poured our soul out in order to reach the
others that are there, sharing space with us? Chances are you already have a
third place and you just have never thought about it. There is one place that
you go where people recognize you and miss you if your not there. My place as
of right now is at Po Boys on College Avenue on Tuesday nights. My friend sings
and I play guitar from 7:00 - 10:00. My buddy is in a fraternity at FSU so we
usually pack the deck out. It has been a great experience for me to become
friends with all the people that come on a regular basis and the people that
work there.
People aren't coming to Christ by the dozens because I play
guitar at a bar downtown, but relationships are being built that honor God. I
am convinced that the moment we as Christians stop rubbing shoulders with the
rest of the world we sacrifice the power of the cross that we have. I was already playing on Tuesday nights before
this concept was introduced to me and I just needed to tweak my outlook a
little in order to make an effort to build relationships with people that are
far from God.
A quick story from when third places go right: I have a friend, Jason Borger, who wins most
influential in the life of James Parsons for 2008, (I know what your thinking,
very prestigious). He supported me by
coming to hear me play on Tuesday nights and quickly became a regular and I
cannot count the number of people that would ask me where Jason was if he
missed a Tuesday. I didn't even know a lot of these people's names but they
knew that Jason and I were friends. In
these folk's eyes, Jason is known not as the guy that goes to the Well, or as a
banker, but as a guy that enjoys listening to his buddy play guitar...people are
searching for this type of friend.
So I want to encourage everybody to keep up the good work.
Be on the lookout for an email address that you can send your third places to
so we as a church can be apart of your third place. We could create a movement
of people that enable each other to have all the resources needed to have a
great third place.
I thank god everyday for everyone already involved
at the Well, and for those who are yet to come. As we head into the New Year
let us find our new place, or be intentional at the places we are already
at. May God Bless you!
(James Parsons returns to Tallahassee Community College this Spring for his near-last semester and continues his work as one of Publix Supermarket's premier Seafood Specialisits.)
