The Well is a church that is committed to connecting with the unchurched community of Tallahassee. It is the desire of the Well to create an atmosphere that is engaging to this generation in the twenty-first century. While the culture of Tallahassee is always changing, we believe that the message of Jesus Christ is as relevant today as it was 2,000 years ago. The Well is a church that will speak an everlasting truth in an ever-changing culture.

"For the single most important institution shaping Western culture is the university. It is at the university that our future political leaders, our journalists, our teachers, our business executives, our lawyers, our artists, will be trained. It is at the university that they will formulate or, more likely, simply absorb the worldview that will shape their lives. And since these are the opinion-makers and leaders who shape our culture, our worldview that they imbibe at the university will be the one that shapes our culture. If the Christian worldview can be restored to a place of prominence and respect at the university, it will have a leavening effect throughout society. If we change the university, we change our culture through those who shape culture." (Moreland & Craig)

WELL SAID
"Maybe the Grinch Got a Bum Rap" by Paul Peavy

d Funny thing is, I don't think it was the Grinch that so much stole Christmas.

No, we happily gave it away.  Much as Satan doesn't do anything dressed in his little red suit, red horns and pitch fork, we just kind of put God aside on our own.

Christmas is huge and I'm as guilty as anyone about enjoying the commercialization end of it.  I have awakened at 3 a.m. on Black Friday to make the conquest of a big screen TV at Best Buy.  We have so many Christmas lights that the women of the house can't blow dry their hair while the decorations are lit without blowing a fuse.

I told Dean that Christmas reminds me of an old recurring Saturday Night Live skit where somebody's dashboard Elvis comes to life as "Tiny Elvis."  For us around Christmas time, the Majestic Son of God and Prince of Peace simply becomes "Tiny Jesus."

I was talking to a friend, we'll call him Chris (because his name is Chris), the other day who spoke about his rebellious days in college.  He was brought up in a Christian school and knew the bible inside and out.  He just had no interest in having God in his life at the time.  Finally a fraternity brother invited him to his church and he said the pastor was a very cool and laid back and generous man.  The pastor then came over and just hung out and talked with these guys for 17 weeks in a row.  Chris said he was mostly just so impressed with this pastor's generosity.  For example, he would loan his car out at the drop of a hat.  Chris would say to him, "How can you do that?  You don't have the money to replace that if it gets wrecked or torn up?"  The pastor replied, "Chris, its all just stuff.  It's gonna burn up in the end anyway!"

Chris said his final rebuttal about having a relationship with God was this argument: "You are the omnipotent God.  All knowing, all powerful, all everything and when people are sinning and rejecting you and creating chaos the best you can come up with is to send your son down here to be spat on, mocked and crucified?"

As he said that and as I thought of the unsaved and even atheist people at the Moon Sunday night, I thought "yeah, that had to be the only plan."  The absolutely perfect plan.  Because when God started this great idea of having human companionship, the one rule he put in place was free will for man.  So, the only other plans could have been to change his mind and make us worshiping robots or to bribe us with gold castles.

The plan had to be: "I will send my son to the simplest of families to show the people that I am their God from the simplest of people on up.  My son will be brought up working with his hands as a carpenter's son and many of his posse will be fishermen.  Yep, just salt of the earth folks.  My son will show that you can live perfectly in fellowship with God in your life here on earth.  My son will then be sacrificed for your sins on the cross.  And by the way, while he is dying on that cross, he will say to those who crucified him, to you, to me, 'Father forgive them for they know not what they do.'"

(Just in case you ever get mad at someone for talking bad about you and don't think you can forgive them think back on that!)

Yeah, it's the perfect plan.  But the bigger deal for us is to get beyond "Tiny Jesus."  Back in the day when people were getting all worked up about stuff people would say, "Don't make such a big hairy deal!"  I have had this thought and I hope I don't get struck by lightning by actually putting it on paper but we need to go from "Tiny Jesus" to "Big Hairy Jesus."  Yes, from the region he was born in as a grown man he probably had thick black hair, facial hair, and, groan, yes, hair on his back.  But we've got to work on taking Jesus from the cradle to making him the size of a Macy's Day Parade balloon in our lives.

Christmas is a great time to acknowledge the greatest plan ever.  The plan that started with "Tiny Jesus."  It is also time to take the challenge to let him grow into a big hairy deal in your everyday life.
