WELL SAID
"And Heaven and Nature Sing" by Stephanie Cram
What are you willing to let Jesus do through you?
During elementary school I was a member of J.O.Y.--a hand bell and choir group that performed for schools, churches and nursing homes. The acronym stood for Jesus first, Others second, Yourself last, and it was printed on all our matching T-shirts. Isn't it funny how such a simple phrase can sum up the gospel in a way a child can understand, and in a way that affects how that child lives the rest of her life? No, I don't always remember to live by JOY, but God has done incredible things through my life when I put Him first, others second and myself last. Isaiah 61:1-2 gives some insight of how the Lord intends to use us to reach the lost and the hurting if we would simply let Him:
The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is upon me, for the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted and to proclaim that captives will be released and prisoners will be freed. 2 He has sent me to tell those who mourn that the time of the LORD's favor has come, and with it, the day of God's anger against their enemies. 3 To all who mourn in Israel, he will give a crown of beauty for ashes, a joyous blessing instead of mourning, festive praise instead of despair. In their righteousness, they will be like great oaks that the LORD has planted for his own glory. (emphasis added)
Rather than go into all the details, I've decided to highlight just some of the amazing things I've been apart of the past fours years when I put Jesus first and others second. There were plenty of times I tried to say no because I knew it would make me uncomfortable and force me to interact with strangers - Eek! But if we are honest with ourselves, and truly believe that God is who He says He is, then how can anyone tell Him no?
The past four years:
I quit my job to spend time with a missionary organization that sent me to China and Thailand. I had bargained with God that I would join this group so long as He didn't send me to Asia; I'm a picky eater and thought I'd have too many problems with the food.
While in China I loved on several orphans. Our group brought them clothes, plowed their fields, showed them how to play some American sports, and simply enjoyed being with these forgotten children. My favorite day was when I cut out little paper crowns for each child and prayed over each one as we handed them their crowns. I told the other missionaries I had been commissioned by the King to make crowns for His princes and princesses.
On another day in China, a sister missionary and myself bought some bread and flowers, then spent the rest of the day handing out bread to the homeless people and flowers to lonely female shop workers. Along with these gifts, we also gave copies of some verses from the Chinese Bibles we had smuggled into the country. The faces on these people lit up when reading these verses, and the only Chinese I could speak to them was Jesu ai ni - Jesus loves you. One elderly homeless woman pointed to the sky and repeated, "Jesu, Jesu, Jesu ai ni".
Our team carried on conversations in broken English with college students and performed dramas in front of strangers. We even spent a day in a village of 200 people in which we were their first non-Chinese visitors, and we had dinner with the only Christian man in the village.
The most memorable day had to be when I found out my 99-year-old aunt was probably not going to live through the week. I had called my mom in the morning (my one phone call home during two months in China), and the first words out of her mouth were, "Aunt Julie is dying." That afternoon, eleven missionaries stood in the middle of a Chinese city with over 4 million people and prayed for my aunt's soul while armed Chinese police walked by. My aunt was not a believer, and she died within the week. I can only hope that one day I will see her again. I don't believe in coincidence, so I don't believe my one phone call home to the states on that particular day was an accident.
After my time in China, our team headed to Thailand where I helped run something similar to a vacation Bible school. Our team was providing the child care during a conference of underground missionaries across Asia. We had to sign affidavits saying we wouldn't take any pictures at the events, and we wouldn't tell our family or friends what we were doing until long after it was over.
During my time with this organization I also found myself in a county jail in Albuqueque, New Mexico praying for inmates and sharing my testimony. I had conversations with homeless people at a downtown Denver coffee shop where the homeless could rest for the evening. I packaged and distributed Thanksgiving dinners for the needy - outside during a snow storm might I add. And put on a talent show at an elderly care facility that rarely had visitors.
Since leaving this organization I've been on a trip to the island country of Vanuatu where I was able to simply love on children. I helped put on an island style carnival, complete with coconuts for balls. When one woman asked why I had come all the way from the United States to her little country, I replied, "Because Papa Gawd loves you enough that He sent me to tell you." She was speechless. But her eyes cleared asked, "He loves me that much?"
I arranged for a former colleague, his cancer stricken wife, and their family of 11 to take a free trip to Hawaii; another miraculous story in and of itself.
My husband and I moved from California to Florida so I could attend graduate school, only to find out the real reason is so that I can share the love of Jesus with one of my lost aunt's and her husband.
What are you willing to let Jesus do through you? Would you quit your job? Would you travel around the world and love complete strangers? These past four years haven't always been easy, but they have certainly been overflowing with J.O.Y.
