WELL SAID
"In God We Trust" by Laura Ragland
I just voted yesterday for the first time. Over the past few weeks I have tried to stay
clear of political hype and I formed opinions on who to vote for by listening
to those I trusted most: parents, aunts, uncles, siblings and friends. I
thought seriously about voting for each candidate at different times over the
past few weeks. However, when it all came down to it I voted the exact same way
the people I listed above voted. I was surprised at how excited I was yesterday
morning to do so. I found myself engaging in political banter with friends
throughout my early classes. I also found myself to be quite annoyed when I
saw stickers of the opposing candidate and thinking to myself "what are they thinking?" or "they shouldn't be
voting that way."
I realized that the basis for my political choices is the
same basis I have for every decision I make: Who do I put my trust in? Who do I
talk to when I make a difficult decision? Who do I call upon when I am upset?
The unfortunate truth of the answer to all of these questions is that it is
rarely God. It's my mom, it's my boyfriend, and it's my friends. It's everyone I can talk to with ease and who
generally tells me what I want to hear. For me, it's not easy to talk to God.
I told my Dad a few weeks ago that "I don't know how to listen to God." I'm never really sure if I am doing what He wants me to do.
One day I am content with my life and the next day I feel like I am caught up
in a tornado. I rush through my days trying to fix this and fix that, change
this person, talk to this person, and I generally never accomplish any of it--at
least not how I wanted to do it. Take, for
example, that person I wanted to change.
Well, they didn't want to be changed. Or that person who I think is voting the wrong
way. Well, tough for me. I can no more change their beliefs any more
than I can move a mountain. I set myself
up for disaster by not having realistic expectations. I ask God to let a situation go the way I
think it should go; the way in which I will be able to respond the best. Well, it doesn't always end up that way.
Instead, I should
simply trust God, and only God, in
every situation and respond to him when I don't understand why things are not
going "my" way. God always answers my
prayers; but sometimes his answer is "No, Laura" or "Not now, Laura."
So, what I have had to learn is that I can't control
everything! I certainly can't change anyone but myself and I can't ask God to
soften someone's heart towards me. I can
only ask God to give me the desire to soften my own heart.
Ephesians 3:14-21 says: "My response is to get down on my
knees before the Father, this magnificent Father who parcels out all heaven and
earth. I ask him to strengthen you by his spirit, not a brute strength but a
glorious inner strength---that Christ will live in you as you open the door and
invite him in. And I ask that with both feet planted firmly on love, you'll be
able to take in with all the followers of Jesus the extravagant dimensions of
Christ's love. Reach out and experience the breadth! Test its length! Plumb the
depths! Rise to the heights! Live full lives, full in the fullness of God. God
can do anything you know---far more than you could ever imagine or guess or
request in your wildest dreams! He does it not by pushing us around but by
working within us, his spirit deeply and gently within us."
God will always give us a mighty, unlimited strength and
will never give us something we can't handle. We simply just cannot do anything
without Him. Whoever became the new president last night should not be our
concern. All we have to realize is that
God's will is going to (and did) occur and we need to walk in the reality of
worship and trust and know that the Lord is near. Our job is to rise up in
Christ and let a newness and freshness be in our hearts.

FSU, planning to major in Exercise Science, and runs as a member of the women's track team. Laura is a registered voter in Leon County, Florida, U.S.A.)
