WELL SAID
"Everybody's Working for the Wekkend" by Jason Borger

As evidenced by my involvement with the Well's "college group", while simultaneously holding the facebook status as "Alum", the groundwork has been laid for a great case of identity crisis.  Now don't get me wrong, a little under a year ago I was finishing up classes at Liberty University and I joined the 8-5 world only a few months after; so my involvement in the group is not that unfounded.  However, I'm sure the same reasoning runs through the head of the 23 year old who faithfully works the senior parking lot scene of his high school alma mater: "it's only been 5 years since I ruled this place."

For the time being though, I play the role of the responsible 8-5er that is still just as edgy as a full-time student. Let me illustrate: the 50 lb. ball & chain, (i.e. neck tie) is clamped on every morning, but jeans with holes in the knees are my evening ticket to the independent coffee shops here in town (I'd be black-listed if they knew I was a banker).  Maintaining the college social life has also been aided by events like the Savannah college retreat a few weekends ago.  Walking the cobble-stone streets in an eclectic city, and a 10+ hour iPod sing-a-long van ride to and from, certainly revealed my edginess.  However, being the appointed driver of the van definitely knocked me into old man status.

Variability best describes what I am trying to compensate for in the working world of permanence.  I never fully realized how great a semester is.  In the event you are stuck in an 8:00 am class or even must go to class five days a week...gasp; it will all change in a few months.  The truth is that college holiday breaks (10 weeks for summer, 4 weeks for Christmas, and a week for Spring Break and Thanksgiving) all are clearly better than two weeks of 8-5 vacation, which kicks in only after "probation" time (read no breaks at all).

The silver lining in this grey cloud is the "daily bread" mindset I have been reminded of.  Planning for the next break/change now leads to wishing away all the days in between, or even worse turning me into a weekend warrior (thank you Loverboy).  Proverbs 27:1 reminds us that all we have is today.  Jesus taught his disciples to pray asking for their daily bread, and I don't think this was referring to a dinner time prayer.

So the challenge to myself, which I'm sure applies to many others, is to be reminded that I am here on ____ ____, 20__, for the purpose of bringing glory to God today.   It amazes me that prayer is usually the last resort for my daily issues and concerns.  Instead, looking to that next big change is a byproduct of my negligence to realize God's daily provision for my current needs.  Therefore, I always need to remind myself that life's calendar does not have filler days in preparation for the next big kick, but rather that God has given me just enough for today's needs and my mindset and actions need to reflect that.

(Jason Borger, originally from Ft. Lauderdale, is a Liberty University alum and works at Hancock Bank, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday.)
