WELL SAID
"Squirm" by Dr. Lindsay Knipple

I'm not very good at change.  In fact, I downright stink at it.  It took me 27 years to cut my hair above my shoulders.  So when it came to moving to Gainesville to start my residency, there was quite a bit of anxiety.  The thought of moving to Tebow-obsessed Gator Country evoked slight indigestion.  The thought of starting a residency and someone calling me "Doctor" gave me a touch of heartburn.  But the thought of having no church family, no Christian friends, no bible studies and, worst of all, no 'The Well'?  ULCER!

The truth is that Tallahassee is comfortable for me.  And realizing that, I'm beginning to see why God brought me here.  My whole Christian walk has been about God pushing me out of my comfort zone...pushing me to a place that challenged me and grew me in new ways.  You see, as wonderful as it may seem to be submerged in a Christian subculture, its easy to become so involved that you lose sight of the reality of the world around you.  The reality is that for the past five months I have gone to work, gone to the grocery store, gone to dinner to meet new people, and not once have I met a Christian.   None of my patients have mentioned their faith.  My coworkers squirm in their seats at the thought of attending a church service.  My bosses are all too scientifically minded to allow faith to interfere with reason.  Part of me yearns for Christian fellowship.  It's something that I need, and I'm okay searching for that here.  Perhaps I'll find it here soon.  But there's a part of me that knows that there is more to my story here in Gainesville.   God is challenging me by surrounding me with people who desperately need to know the Lord, but don't have any desire to do so.  He's saying to me, "I've been preparing you for this.  I have confidence in you.  It's time to rely on me.  There's no one else.  Trust me and allow me to use you."

My fear is that I can't do it alone.  My fear is that I'll fail miserably reflecting Christ in my day-to-day interactions.  My fear is that I am not strong enough to be surrounded by non-Christians day in and day out.  But perhaps what I should be afraid of is being comfortable.  You see, I believe that comfortable is dangerous.  Comfortable says "This is the way it's always been."  Comfortable says, "This doesn't make me work at my faith."  Comfortable says, "Don't go there, because you might actually have to defend what you believe, and worse, you might actually have to be a friend to that person."  Being comfortable means never really going to the places that God desires you to go to, both physically and emotionally.  Comfortable means selling God short.

I believe in many ways that my involvement in the early development of The Well was preparing me for this very moment.  Nothing rings more truly in my heart than when Dean speaks of being relate-able, in touch, and approachable with non-Christians...not filling your days with bible studies and Christian social events, but instead, going to where non-Christians are.   And even though I do believe our intentions are good, when we invite non-Christians to a Bible study or Christian social event, the only person who is stepping out of their comfort zone is them!

No one likes to be uncomfortable.  I'd be lying if I said I liked change.  But I believe that in order to make a difference here, and anywhere God leads me, it has to be me, and not those I'm ministering to, that's willing to squirm a little.  And, even though it sometimes takes moving me to an entirely new place, that's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.
