WELL SAID
"Building Sandcastles" by Bennett Acuff

I sin. I sin a lot, and I sin in cycles. I struggle with the same sins routinely, and for some reason, each time I come back to my sin I act like I've never seen it before and I have no idea how to avoid it. It's complete BS and I know it.

Have you ever seen the old TV show Home Improvement? In every single episode Tim "the tool man" Taylor does something stupid or selfish that angers his wife Jill. Tim then speaks with his brilliant, eclectic neighbor Wilson who explains to Tim the error of his ways through an anecdote about Pigmies, the ancient Mayans, or something else outlandish. Tim sees that he's wrong, apologizes to Jill, and tries to summarize what Wilson said. However, Tim always botches Wilson's words-like a two-man game of telephone, and hilarity ensues. My struggle with sin is just as repetitive, monotonous, and easy to see coming as any episode of Home Improvement:

  1. I sin;
  2. I feel bad about it, I feel far from God, and I repent;
  3. After some time of not committing the specific sin, I feel good;
  4. I feel so good that I forget my guilt and I put myself in the same position that led to the sin; and
  5. I repeat steps 1-4.

It is hard to acknowledge and it's a very sobering thought, but when I succumb to temptation, I am the only one responsible. The truth is laid out pretty clear in James 1, 13-14:

"When tempted, no one should say, 'God is tempting me.' For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed."

If you struggle with alcohol and you head to Ken's bar with friends you normally drink with and you wake up the next morning with a pounding head and a heart full of regret, it's hard to ask "How did this happen?" Or if you struggle with sexual sin and you go to a fraternity social and agree to go back to the guy's room after a night of drinking, it's impossible to be stupefied the next morning when you wake up next to someone you don't really know and some serious guilt. I can guarantee that no college guy has ever come home innocently from class and found a laptop playing pornography in his bedroom; it just doesn't happen. There are usually a number of steps that separate us from sinning and we often initiate each one.

What normally happens to me and to all of us is we take a number of steps away from God and closer to temptation--each one might seem trivial individually, but when taken in the aggregate they put you in a situation where you are almost inevitably going to sin. And don't get me wrong, it is very easy to say "Dean tells us that Christ was in the world, hanging out with sinners, and so I need to also." That can easily be a cop-out because being in the world and engaging non-believers is completely different than being of the world, and being influenced by non-believers.

Regardless of whether your weakness is lust, gossip, drunkenness or anger, we all make choices. Those small choices drag us away from our Father and get us closer and closer to the tipping point of sin.

My challenge for myself and for everyone is to be cognizant. Let's acknowledge and share our weaknesses with each other. If there's a path that 10 out of 10 times leads to sinful behavior, let's not take it! It's an almost insultingly simple idea, but it is very hard to live out. Let's all take responsibility for our sin and set ourselves apart as followers of Christ.
