WELL SAID
"Unintended Consequences" by Marty Stubblefield

"Then he said
to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life
does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."
And he told them this parable: "The
ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my
crops.'
"Then he said, 'This is what I'll do.
I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my
grain and my goods. And I'll say to myself,
"You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat,
drink and be merry."'
"But God said to him, 'You fool! This
very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have
prepared for yourself?'
"This is how it will be with anyone
who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God." (Luke 12:15-21 NIV)
Over the past number of days I've heard and seen a lot about Economic
Issues, Bankruptcies, Mergers and Bail Outs from some pretty major
players on Wall Street.
And many of us have wondered when someone was going to step up and make
sense of it all, speak about it in plain English, and tell us how to fix
it.
Now many of you are sitting there thinking to yourself: "Finally, that
banker dude is going to explain it all..."
I don't really have any answers. As someone cynically said recently
"that's above my pay grade..." I do think I could at least basically
explain what all has happened going back to 1999 or so: some of
the loosening of proper credit standards to help folks buy houses that may
have led to many of the issues that we are seeing today, from foreclosures...
to the Wall Street mess... and all the dominoes in between. It's all about
unintended consequences that should have been thought through back 9 or 10 years
ago.
But ultimately, over and above the unintended consequences, it all
boils down to greed.
Greed, and to a lesser extent, ignorance.
From the home buyer with eyes bigger than their pocket books... to the
realtor trying to sell a house in the midst of the boom... to the mortgage
broker taking the sub-prime loan application... to the mortgage company... to
the investment bank... to the CEOs & upper management of these
investment banks... and even to the politicians receiving lobbying funding
from these groups...
It all comes down to worshiping the Almighty Dollar.
To Greed.
The Bible reminds of the consequences of greed and warns us over and
over about turning away from greed and about becoming "rich toward God." It
reminds us of the rich young ruler and his stuff and reminds us of the
immorality of greed, and how that greed steals our focus from God and puts it
square on us and the accumulation of more... More... MORE.
The Word continues on to tell us about storing up Treasures in Heaven and asking about our heart and our heart's focus...our heart's
treasure.
I certainly can't make sense of all that is going on right now and can talk through how one step led to another and another to get us to this
point.
But, again, ultimately all of this leads to a few more questions to be
asked personally, corporately, nationally, and world-wide: Where is our
heart in all this? What have we learned?
And, is our heart ever going to get refocused on the ultimate Treasure: the riches found in the Love of Jesus Christ and all that comes from being a
follower of His?
Keep the Faith... Carpe Diem
"Do not store up for yourselves
treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and
steal. But store up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do
not break in and steal. For where your
treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:19-21
NIV)
