WELL SAID
"Loose Talk" by Jovanna Gomez

A couple of Sundays ago I was on the couch--one of my favorite parts of the Well's Sunday service. I enjoyed being up there, answering questions and sharing about my life. However, after going home and thinking about the night, I was filled with an overwhelming sense of coulda, shoulda, woulda.
I mean, I was on the couch, with an opportunity to share with everyone how God has changed my life in the past year, to be honest about what I struggle with and yet, what'd I do? The same thing I always do when challenged with any sort of serious matter, I brought humor into it. So everyone sat there, entertained by my sarcasm and witty responses, but really, that's what comedy clubs or even my time on stage doing the welcome and announcements are for. Not the couch.
Matthew asked me, "What do you struggle with?"
My mind jumbled and my words stumbled. How could I confess to almost 400 people the truth? So what came out?
Cursing.
Cursing? Are you serious Jovanna? COME ON!
I censored myself. I am definitely one of those speak-and-then-think people, and the one time when my raw honesty would have been appreciated, I held back.
How should I have answered that question, then?
Well, the uncensored truth is I struggle with the temptation of sex.
I struggle with wanting to get wasted and dance like an idiot and laugh about it the next day.
I struggle with a fear of a boring life if I continue to follow Christ.
I struggle with wanting to watch 10 re-runs of Law and Order SVU instead of reading one chapter in my bible.
I struggle with keeping my faith when I don't feel Him there.
I struggle with being disciplined.
THAT'S what I struggle with. Cursing? Not so much.
So there I am. Jovanna-uncut, unplugged, uncensored...telling you what I should have said September 7th. So now, off the couch, I have a new challenge for you:
When asked the tough questions, about your faith, about your struggles, about Jesus, be real, be raw---don't hold back, because in those cases, an honest answer will go a lot further than an acceptable one.
