WELL SAID
"It's Pretty Simple Really" by Paul Peavy

Bad news. Christianity is not a hierarchy. OK, big word in second sentence. That means preachers and deacons and church elders are not held to a different standard than you and I. OK, there's a little bit of a hierarchy, there's God, there' Jesus, then there's us.
When I thought God was calling me to be a preacher I found it very, very irritating that people would start to act differently around me because of that. I never found the scripture that said Jesus took an extra lash of the whip for preachers. He did not hang on the cross any longer for the sake of the missionaries. The same expectation you may hold of a preacher boy is probably the expectation that God has of you.
I briefly (actually it felt like it was in dog years) went to seminary in New Orleans. You would not know it from your visits there or their own chamber of commerce promotions but New Orleans is a strongly Catholic town. I was working at a shoe store (yes, always working on one kind of sole or another). There was this really hot looking Hispanic girl I worked with. She said to me, "So you want to be a father, heh?" At first I thought that was the slickest come on line I had ever heard. Then I remembered that she was catholic. I am not an expert in Catholicism but it seems to me that there is some sort of hierarchy in their belief system. But not one that I can find in my bible. "For God so loved the world he sent his only son to die for the preachers and missionaries in Guyana..." Nope God loved little old me enough to sacrifice his son. So the expectation is the same for me. And God knows my little ol' heart, thoughts, desires, and actions, so there's no point in pretending he doesn't.
Like the Christmas song about Santa Claus, "He knows when you've sleeping (and with whom), he knows when you're awake..." Only God has, like, soul piercing X-Ray glasses. In a giant battle of good vs good God would freeze Santa for centuries in with his great "Cold as Ice Stare" powers. So there's no point in trying to compartmentalize your religion. As I tell people when I give talks, there's an old saying of, "You've got to separate your work from religion." It can't be done. Nope. Your religion encompasses every thought you take, everything you do. If you don't think God is big enough to meet your financial needs then you cheat on your taxes. If you don't think God can help you understand algebra than you copy someone else's work. If you don't think it's important to be an example of Christ's love to everyone you come in contact with then you go ahead and cuss out whoever you're having a problem with. If you're going out to get drunk tonight please note that you are essentially walking up to God and saying, "Check ya' later I'm going out to get drunk. I know you don't think I should but I don't really care what you think. What my friends think of me is waaay more important." Your life is the complete and total expression of your religion.
In church we sometimes ask if you feel you are being "called into the ministry." Folks, everyone of us who has accepted Christ has been called into the ministry. The truth is that you probably have a better chance to witness to your friends, in your class, or in your job than a preacher ever will. When people find out someone's a preacher they act different, they put on a happy face. But if you're studying together, cutting their hair, working out with them, having lunch, taking their lunch order, they are open to your witness.
Look, Christianity is pretty simple. Christ died for you. What you do with your life based on that information is up to you. Everything else becomes an excuse or a justification. So go out there and live that truth to the fullest!
