WELL SAID
"Unconquered" by Dean Inserra

Football season is here! In Tallahassee, it means that your best friend since you were four years old would miss your wedding if it took place at the same time as an FSU game.
I find myself arranging my entire weekend calendar around 18-22 year olds playing a game. The game, atmosphere, excitement, etc is awesome! There is nothing like that first Saturday when it starts to get cold and you are tailgating before the game. My personal favorite pre-game spot is the famous tailgate of the Well's own Clint Mayo, President of the Tallahassee Seminole Club. He does chicken biscuits before a noon kickoff! I am seriously the guy who watches the Wednesday night game on ESPN2 between Toledo and Bowling Green. I just love the game.
There are also parts of the entire college football world that trouble me.
I will have to hear friends of mine getting criticized up and down by some 300 pound dude who gives money for a good parking spot and therefore assumes he has the right to booo a 19 year old playing in front of 80,000 people and an entire tv audience who is actually more nervous than the guy with his face painted. Don't you love that guy? He also stands the entire game and spends so much time telling everyone else to "get up, come on, this is a football game" that he actually misses the game itself. He always does the "everyone stand" hand motion...you know, the reverse wing flap...upward motion. You will hear him Monday afternoon: he is the first guy to call into the sports-talk station and request that every coach get fired and player benched. He will also have "Unconquered" written on his t-shirt. He is apparently passionate about the Seminole Tribe in fear of the NCAA who wanted to change the nickname of his beloved Noles. He wrote the NCAA a letter a day from his bedroom in his parents' basement. Someone told him the week before that Chief Osceola was actually a white kid from the suburbs...he hasn't been the same since, so show compassion for him. He feels like he has been lied to for 48 years.
I should probably cut him a little slack. There are also the folks that have their entire hopes and dreams attached to the Presidential Election. An Obama or McCain victory is the most important thing in their life. Change, Security, Gas prices, Health care, Marriage Amendments, the Supreme Court appointments...these are the urgent matters of our day and society as we know it will be ruined without my candidate being elected! How did we get to this place of thought?
Before I place my hope in a Politician or a policy...before I revolve my life around a Saturday afternoon game...I must ask myself who the One is that is really unconquered? Who is the One who truly is the hope for the World? In a world where many have been raised in the youth-group culture of Jesus is my homeboy, buddy, and boyfriend...there are many college students and adults who have a very weak view of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ. He is not some hippie who threw around the peace sign, had a co-exist bumper sticker on the back of his donkey, and ate his veggie burger while trying to figure out where the next show is for the latest band that is too under-appreciated. He is the King of Kings. Scripture tells us that He is the firstborn over all creation, that by Him all things were made. He is the Alpha and Omega. Greater than Moses. Believe it or not...He is greater than Obama, McCain, Biden, or Palin. Greater than Jimbo, injuries on the offensive line, and the BCS rankings.
This Sunday we will begin a new series at the Well called "Unconquered." My prayer is that it will give us the highest view of the Person and Work of Jesus Christ that we have ever had in our lives. I pray that we will be so convinced of His greatness that it will give us a whole new understanding of how amazing His death in our place on the cross truly was. I love football. I enjoy politics. However, there is always a new season, recruiting class, and election. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
So please tell the 21-year old frat guy, boo-ing at the game, who was a really good neighborhood football player in middle school to chill. He can always redo the game on his X-Box.
