WELL SAID
"Savannah Smiles" by Scott Simmons

mcr

It was less than two months ago that Jen and I were vacationing in Savannah, GA (insert plug here for the College Retreat, wahoo!) celebrating our four year anniversary.  Like everyone who visits Savannah as a tourist, you've got to hit the fountains, the churches, the cemeteries, the shops on River Street and the food hot-spots.  In a few days you can experience just about everything you came for and be on your merry way to your next cache of beautiful memories.

But sometimes you get three-quarters of the way into your perfect getaway of restful bliss, only to then realize that perhaps you've ignored the idea that God may use you there.

It was 6ish in the evening and the fam had settled down for one delicious pizza pie on the outskirts of Savannah's marketplace.  I believe Jen and I were both on our third slice, while Karsyn was busy making faces and waving to anyone that would give her a look.  You know that part of a slice of pizza right in the center where it's as if all of your mouth is engorged in every possible ingredient? That's where I was, eyes probably rolled back in my head in bountiful goodness.  As I began to savor the aroma of fresh pepperoni beneath my nose, I looked to the left to see a man, dirty clothes and balding hair, leaned halfway over into the trash can not ten feet from our table.  He arose with a handful of peanuts that he immediately held tightly to this chest, probably hoping he'd not overlook a single one.  By now you could see faces from each table look over with disgust and filth, hoping that soon this man would leave the premises and crawl back into the hole he came from.  His ten second or so dive into the trash seemed like an hour, but only because I soon became unsettled in my chair.  Heart racing.  Brow sweating.  But this is my vacation!, I thought to myself.  Surely some other kind soul will come to the rescue of this hungry man.  (long pause)  No?  Don't these people have a heart?  Why won't someone do something!

Then God broke me.  I was a mountain of shame...a pile of dung... useless.  I had spent the last three days living and eating like a king and here was this scavenger, desperately searching for his next meal and hoping some crumbs might fall off of my glorious table.  I knew in that instant that God was giving me a choice...choose Him or choose me.

As I watched the man walk away in search of the next scrap receptacle, I looked down and saw one remaining piece of pizza.  For a moment, light seemed to shine down from heaven on that tasty, Italian slice of redemption.  I ran inside the restaurant and grabbed the nearest plate I could find and went looking for him.  A few minutes later, there was my friend down the next alley...dirty clothes and balding hair, leaning halfway over into another trash can, just as I remembered our last encounter.  I ran up to him, gave up the slice, said a few words to him, and turned back.  As I neared the end of the alley, I looked back and saw a picture that, for me, will last a lifetime...a hungry man fed because I said yes to Jesus.  He was all smiles, and so was I.

How will we respond to the needs of our city, our campuses, our friends, our foes?

Let's say yes and see what happens.
