WELL SAID
"Aud Lang Syne" by Dr. Matthew Robinson

The Staples Back to School Extravaganza Sale in this past
Sunday's advertisement circular got me excited.
Fresh Crayolas for only a quarter a pack. Rulers on sale for a
nickel. Premium gel roller medium tipped
multi-colored packs of Pilot pens buy-one-get-one for $3.99. These are the shopping opportunities I
relish!
I've known forever that I wanted to be a teacher. And I love school supplies. I was that six year old who asked Santa for
his own stapler and tape dispenser set.
I loved every aspect of school, from the very first day of kindergarten
to my first day standing in front of a class of my own. My life for so long has revolved around the
180 day, 9 week quarters, 2 semester blocks of time called "school". New Year's Eve in my world has always been a
restless night's sleep of anticipation, anxiety, and excitement as the
adventure of a new school year and "the first day" begins.
Next Monday I return to my spot in the front of the
classroom. This past Monday public
school students in Leon and many other counties across the state returned to
begin their New Year. As I begin my
sixth year of teaching, I know that Sunday night, post-service at the Well,
tossing around in bed, I'll have that same mix of anticipation, anxiety, and
excitement that I've felt for the past 21 years of first-days-of-school that
I've experienced.
But this year it's different. This year I've been fired up about taking an
everlasting truth to an ever-changing culture.
This year I recognize that this city's largest mission field exists as
over 65,000 students begin studying once again at one of the area's three
colleges. This year I understand the
significance of my role in and out of the classroom in living the prayer that
"greater things are yet to come, greater things are still to be done in this
city."
I've recently been challenged by the verses in 1 Peter
5:2-4:
"Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care,
serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God
want you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over
those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will
receive the crown of glory that will never fade away."
Though Peter was exhorting the elders of the Church, I'm
certain that each of us has a "flock" of sorts that is under our care.
Is it the children you care for?
Is it the co-workers in your adjoining cubicles?
Is it the staff you manage?
Is it the patrons you wait on?
Is it the business owners with whom you partner?
Is it the students
who call you Dr. Robinson?
I don't understand flocks very well. I wasn't apart of Ag in high school and
wasn't friends with the 4H gang either.
But I've watched the ducks at Lake Ella and have been to a petting zoo
once or twice, and I've come to realize not only what a flock is, but also
recognize the flocks with which I've been entrusted.
Who is a part of your flock?
Who have you been entrusted to care for, to share with, to speak Truth
to and to love unconditionally during this New Year? Who in your life have you let wander and go
astray?
As the momentum of a New Year approaches for The Well, it is
my prayer that we all have that mix of anticipation, anxiety, and excitement
each day with caring for and reaching out to our flocks. It's contagious. And it's relational. And it's what makes all the difference
Happy first day of school, and Happy New Year!
( Matthew Robinson on his first day of kindergarten, circa August 1987.)
