WELL SAID
"Compromise" by Sarah Graves
I've had five different jobs over the past five years. I've worked at night in a
fast pace, high stress atmosphere, and at a desk job, in a relaxed atmosphere.
With all the differences between each of them, they all had one common detail
and requirement: compromise. In our jobs and even in our relationships with one
another, it's important to compromise on things to keep everyone happy.
Compromise
is something we all need to submit to in order for us to get along in the
world. We see it all over the place: all the way from our world leaders working
with one another for peace, down to a group of kids at the recess trying to
figure out whether to play kickball or tag. It's never easy at first, but in
the end we hopefully come to an agreement that everyone can be satisfied with.
You give a little to get a little. For instance, at one point in my restaurant
serving career, my fellow employees and I had to come to a compromise on how we
were going to roll the silverware. It really didn't matter how, just as long as
it looked presentable and the same as all the others. One would think that a
situation like this would take no time at all; quick decision making
right? Wrong. It took weeks for all of
us to compromise on one common way to roll silverware. It was hard. People were
set in their ways and they wanted to roll the silver the way they wanted to
because to them, it was the best way to roll forks and knives. But in the end
we came to a compromise and all the silver looked immaculate and uniform. Compromise
is something we never feel like doing because of the hard work and effort it
requires, but in the end it usually results in something positive.
So
why is it when it comes to our faith, compromise is the easiest thing to do and
always has the worst results? Why is it that when it comes to compromising with
our spouse on furniture arrangements it drives us to counseling, but when it
comes to compromising God for fleeting happiness there's no difficulty at all?
At what point in our faith do we get to where God is the one thing that's
hardest to compromise and we're not willing to bend?
The
answer is hard to accept, but it's the best thing that can ever happen to us.
It's when we start to realize that God is bigger than we are and we begin
striving to care more about Him than we care about ourselves. It's when we care
more about what He wants rather than complying with the rest of the world. Some
would say there is a fine line between being relevant to the world and being a
part of the world. I believe there is one distinct difference, and it's bold
and clear as day. That difference is where we put Christ in our lives.
Displaying spiritual maturity means knowing where to draw the line without
hesitation and knowing that compromising stops when it comes to compromising
our relationship with God. You will know how much you value your faith when you
are faced with compromising it. How we handle that situation is a measure of our
spiritual maturity.
Yes,
compromise is a huge part of how the world is able to operate. It takes
compromise to get anything accomplished and keep peace. We need to put our
selfishness on the back burner for a positive outcome. But compromise is not applicable
when it comes to our faith. We need to be able to distinguish between those two
ideas. If we find ourselves so easily compromising our faith, then we are
making the statement that God isn't enough; so then we ask ourselves, "Do...I...get
it?" Because if we really get it, if we understand what the cross really means,
our only reaction will be to compromise everything else but God. |
