Greetings!
It's that time of year when kids are excited to strap on their backpacks, lace up their new sneakers and get back to school for learning and fun! Of course, this time of year doesn't come without an abundance of change. Most notably are the shifts in morning and afternoon rituals, transitions to a new school, adjusting to new teachers, and the changes in the weather.
This year, students will see big changes in the lunchroom, too. New regulations for school lunches from the USDA are part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to help kids achieve better nutrition and to reduce childhood obesity.
Some of the changes include:
- Fruit - More daily servings of fruit will be offered.
- Vegetables - More daily servings of vegetables will be offered to include vegetables from subgroups of dark green, red/orange, beans/peas, starchy vegetables and other vegetables.
- Whole Grains - Offerings more whole-grain foods.
- Meat/Meat Alternate - New daily minimums and weekly ranges have been set for three age/grade groups K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.
- Milk - Must be fat-free (unflavored/flavored) or 1% low fat (unflavored).
- Limiting calories based on the age of children being served.
- Reducing saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.
Students can expect benefits from healthier and more nutritious food in school. Healthy foods are good for the body - they give kids energy and make them stronger. They are also good for the mind. Studies show that when students eat healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables, it can help them pay attention in class and do a better job on homework and tests.
BLEND wishes all students a healthy and safe school year! |
