Greetings!
Fourth of July is a time to celebrate and enjoy the outdoors, fireworks and, of course, delicious food. And when it comes to this patriotic holiday, tradition is everything. It's practically an American obligation to eat hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, apple pie, potato salad, brown beans, and cole slaw. Enjoy the tradition, but consider something new...add some locally grown produce to your next potluck or barbecue outing.
In Minnesota, starting in early spring local farmers and garden enthusiasts are planning, preparing, and planting their gardens; all looking ahead for a season of healthful rewards. Local produce, regardless if it's from your own garden or from a local farmer's market, surely provides benefits for you and your family.
What are the benefits of buying locally grown? It is fresher than anything in the supermarket and that means it is tastier and more nutritious. It is good for your local economy--buying directly from family farmers helps them stay in business. It is also better for the environment -- uses less packaging and less energy on transportation.
It's easy to find markets in your area or locate a grower with specific fruits or vegetables you want. Just enter your zip code on the Minnesota Grown website and they'll provide you a list of local farmers nearest you. Learn what's in season, too! Kathy Geislinger - BLEND Program Specialist
So...on your way home, or on your way to the lake, stop by a stand and buy some fresh, local produce. Be sure to ask your children to help you decide, too, they are more likely to eat the food if they have a hand in selecting it!
BLEND Staff wishes you and your family a safe, healthy and happy Fourth of July! |
