Oak Hill Elementary
 June/2012

Greetings!

Generations from the past have often been quoted to say things like "when I was a kid, I biked 8 miles to get to school." Or, "I had to walk to school in the snow uphill...both ways!"  Today for most children getting to and from school by foot or bike isn't always the case. In many communities, schools simply don't have the safe routes or infrastructure to support children walking or bicycling to and from school.

The number of children who bike or walk to and from school in the U.S. has plummeted.  Meanwhile, the weight of the nation is increasing; one-third of our children are overweight or obese. To work to reverse this trend and change the habits of an entire generation - our communities need to improve pedestrian safety, increase the number of children who walk and bike to and from school and create active neighborhoods for people of all ages and abilities.

Safe Routes To School (SRTS) is working to do just that.  SRTS is a national and international movement to create safe, convenient, and fun opportunities for children to bike and walk to and from school.  Just recently, MN legislatures passed a law establishing a state-level SRTS program to complement the federal program. Minnesota is one of just a handful of states that have established this sort of program.

To learn more about SRTS and local efforts, read the guest blog post below from Angie Stenson, the Senior Transportation Planner at the St. Cloud Area Planning Organization (APO).
