NuVal Food Scoring System:
Nutrition Made Easy |
| In a move to help greater St. Cloud area residents eat better, improve their health and reduce rising obesity rates, a unique team involving CentraCare Health Foundation's BLEND initiative, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota (Blue Cross), and Coborn's grocery stores, introduced the NuValTM nutritional scoring system to Central Minnesota.
The NuVal scoring system, developed by David Katz, M.D., Director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center, and a dozen of the world's leading minds in health and nutrition, gives food items a score from 1 to 100; the higher the score, the higher the nutrition. The system takes more than 30 different nutrients into account in developing a score. Scored categories include meat, seafood, poultry, salty snacks, milk, yogurt, vegetables (fresh, frozen and canned), cereal, bread, cookies, soft drinks, and crackers, among others. Ultimately, NuVal will guide grocery customers in all food categories.
"People today have the will to eat healthier, and NuVal provides the way," said Katz. "In a time where food labels can be so confusing that we literally aren't sure what foods will truly nourish us, NuVal provides a GPS system to find better foods in all aisles of the grocery store." |

You can look for scores with the NuVal trademark grey hexagons on shelf tags - as shown in the sample - throughout the stores. The NuVal system makes it easy to compare overall nutrition the way you compare price. The higher the score, the more nutritious the food. NuVal scores help you get the most nutrition for your money by allowing you to compare price and nutrition side-by-side.
Just in time for Thanksgiving Day celebrations you can do your seasonal shopping using the NuVal system to ensure you are bringing home the most nutritious food for your family.
