2011-2012 Community Investments Announced

Chart
Greetings!

United Way of Marion County's staff and volunteers are proud to announce our new funding partners in the areas of Education, Income and Health for our community.

United Way's new focus on Education, Income and Health will be addressed by mobilizing our community to give, advocate and volunteer in a variety of ways.  Three councils have been established - one for each area. Prior to considering our funding efforts, goals and strategies were developed by our councils' volunteers and then approved by our Board.  As an example, with our Education work, we are not looking to change classroom curriculum but to provide additional resources to help an at-risk child graduate from high school.  Another example for our Income efforts would be to focus on helping families achieve financial stability, not to be in the position of making the choice between keeping the lights on or feeding their children dinner.  Finally, our Health focus must include making more resources available to parents such as a new dental program at the Heart of Florida Health Center.

The investment team volunteers were very focused on identifying the best partners that would be the most successful in delivering outcomes for the strategies, ensuring that both the infrastructure of a program and its service delivery were firmly in place.  Funding is only one way to partner with United Way, so we are looking forward to continued partnerships with many community agencies, both funded by United Way and not, through our future volunteer and advocacy efforts.

We are looking forward to reporting our results to the community throughout the year.

There will be many opportunities for you to get involved with our community impact efforts.  Our first volunteer activity around education.  We are recruiting volunteer readers, mentors and tutors and referring them to schools and organizations.  Contact Chris Cotter if you are interested in getting involved at 732-9696 or ccotter@uwmc.org.
